On Monday, at the same time as she was being spayed, Shama had two baby teeth pulled, her upper right canine and her upper left premolar. Now she's spending most of the day in her ex pen (with us nearby) so that she won't run and jump while she heals from her spay. We're wondering how long we should wait before giving her something to chew (bully spring, water buffalo horn, antler, Himalayan chew). Prior to today, she was doing a lot of sleeping, but today she seems bored (some whimpering as if to say, "I'm so bored!") We'll give her a cotton sock that was cut into strips, braided, soaked in water, and frozen, but do you have any other ideas for anti-boredom activities for Shama which don't involve running, jumping, or chewing on hard things? Do you know of any sort of "everlasting gobstobber" that she could just lick? Thanks!
How long does it take her to lick an entire jar clean? What flavor do you recommend?
Shama doesn't really chew on latex toys. She's very food motivated, so her favorite chews are the ones I mentioned.
I think I may be doing a little projecting of how I would feel onto Shama. I should remember that when we're teaching, she spends many hours in her ex pen and probably does sleep a lot. (Of course she also has all of her regular chews.) I may be feeling like she's bored because I'm looking at her in her pen while we're keeping her company in the dining room. Normally, when she has access to the whole house, she lies around in different spots, plays with her toys (by tossing them and chasing them, not by lying quietly and chewing them), and chews on her regular chews. She probably would look a little bored at times then, too, if I really studied her. She only whimpered a little this morning, probably for less than two minutes off and on total . . .
BTW, for the new people, this is Shama's favorite squeaky ball:
She chases it when we throw it but also throws it around and chases it by herself. It has a horrible squeak to our ears, but she's WILD about it, so we accept the sound!
I recommend lighter color foods to lessen the chance of any mouth staining. Molly loves the chicken, turkey, beef and apples. I have never let her lick a jar at one sitting. I give her a set period of time and then it goes back in the freezer for the next time.
