This may explain some of the stomach issues that many of the pups on this forum have been experiencing. We have a lot of palm trees that drop little dark berries. I decided to look them up to see about toxicity to dogs since Tux is always trying to eat them. Here is a terrifying long list of plants from ASPCA:
My dogs don't have any interest in eating outdoor plants other than grass, thank goodness. But any time I'm looking at potential house plants, I check on my smart phone to make sure they aren't toxic to our pets.
Layla is ALWAyS eating/picking up stuff in the yard! Just this morning I see she has brought in some dead petunia stems from my patio pots(I let them die last weekend while we were outa town, time for fall flowers). She brought them in and I have a soft crate for her in the family rm, she thinks she's hiding in there and took them in and she shredded them to bits. I am super careful what I plant in the yard and my pots! I only plant edible flowers in my pots. The one thing that's hard for me to control is Mushrooms in the yard. This spring for some reason we had tons of little mushrooms in our yard. It drove me "bonkers" picking them daily! I'd be at one end of the yard and she'd be sneaking them from the other end, grrr. She thought it was a glorious game for sure! I found it very difficult to identify which were poisonous and there were many different looking ones. Mushrooms are soooo toxic to dogs!! I got lucky and nothing happened to her, but not sure what I'll do different when the wet weather returns...
That is a great link! Scary the things out there that can hurt them. That is why I don't have any plants at all in our yard other than the lawn grass....and weeds
Ugh those mushrooms are such a problem too! They will be cropping up again now that it's getting cooler and will be getting some rain. I go out every morning and pick them all out and do another check by evening. But can still miss some.
Dumb story, I was walking Hallie at a park years ago and saw some signs at the edge of the field we were on, so went around to read and it was a notice of it being sprayed! I totally freaked...we'd been walking a while there and no signs where we had entered. I flew home in a panic and called the parks dept and was kind of yelling at the poor guy that they didn't have enough signs up and that my dog was sensitive to chemicals and that I even felt dizzy before I saw the signs. He kept trying to cut in, saying "Ma'am! Ma'am!!!" (I don't usually go off on people at ALL but was really freaked). When I finally let him get a word in edgewise, he said "Ma'am! We haven't sprayed that field yet."
I was like, "Oh." "Well OK thank you. And by the way I didn't mention my name did I"?
