Layla's 1st Obedience Trial

My little Havanese girl RULED in Beginner Novice Obedience this weekend! We won 1st in our class Saturday and again today. Yay!! Needless to say, I was so proud of her Both days there were only 6 dogs in our class, BUT both days, Layla was the only dog to qualify. She may be little, but these Havs are mighty! She beat out an Aussie, Lab, a Corgi and others. We got a score of 187 on Sat run and today we got a 190. There's still plenty to work on, (mostly my handling though) our heeling and she didn't sit on the recall. As the first video shows, I need to work on not being so fidgety at the start of each exercise. Geez, I was embarrassed to watch myself .

I know I said we were competing in Advanced Rally, but I pulled out on Sat morning. We had run throughs on Friday evening, and with no treats, I just didn't have a dog, and I wasn't going to beg her to heel by me through a whole course. I think it was the right decision, even though if we'd have qualified each day she would of gotten her Adv Rally title. Plenty of more shows for that though.

I had so much fun and I think Layla did too! I attached the second video cause she's just so darn cute prancing after we got our ribbons! Oh yeah, don't mind her haircut, please, lol. She had a grooming appt on Thur and what was supposed to be a 1-1.5" long puppy cut, didn't turn out that way. Don't tell Layla though. I'm watching grooming videos after I post this.

Awww, that brought a HUGE smile to my face!!! WHAT a good little girlie... That was AWESOME!!!

And I actually love her puppy cut. She still looks SO soft and cuddly!

Congratulations to BOTH of you!!!

And I am SO glad that you listened to your dog and decided you were not quite ready for RA. She is still young, and there is NO rush. Better to wait until you both feel ready for it. I had Panda entered in BN this weekend, and didn't show her... I had forgotten about the signs (rather than the judge calling the pattern) I KNEW she was likely to go "visit" all those signs she had never seen before. So I just didn't run her. There are plenty of other trials to come. No need to rush things.

I also LOVED hearing you husband's(?) commentary in the background. You can tell how much HE loves Miss Layla too!

Thanks, Karen! Yes, he (DH) does LOVE her! I debated on posting for the whole world to hear, but didn't get a video from today, so went for it. I thought he was cute, but I suspect it might be to add a little excitement (creativity)...obedience isn't exactly a spectator sport, haha.

I am glad I scratched Rally too! You wouldn't believe the looks and suggestions I got from people on how I should just try it and how she'll NEVER be totally Trial ready. I just went with my gut though. It was a little disappointing cause she's been heeling off lead beautifully in practice, but I could sense her stress Fri nite and made that decision. I'm with Ricky's Popi on the shows you have out there! Can't remember what organization it is. We only have AKC and I suspect that's the whole West Coast, from what Rick's Popi said about what they have in Calif. I would love to be able to show in the lower classes with treats, just to keep her more engaged. My near term goal is, to work on me being her motivation or treat, so I have more tools when I can't fall back on food. I'll bottle that and sell it when I figure it out, haha.

What a good girl, Layla! That was fun to watch, and I smiled all the way through, too!

You Announcer running the camera made me smile, too! You've got a great cheering section, there!

Your trim job looks perfect and darling from the video! Good job!

Congratulations! Really fun to watch those videos. I liked how you dressed Layla up for the occasion in white gloves and a white scarf. Tee hee . . .

Do keep in mind, though, that even though you can use treats in CDSP (obedience) and WCRL (Rally), they really don't help all that much. You can ONLY use them at the end of stationary exercises in Rally (so anything ending with a sit) and at the end of a complete exercise in obedience. The dogs VERY quickly learn that. There is no luring... Not even the "appearance of luring". That will get you an immediate NQ. And a second command in WCRL is 3 points off... just like in obedience. So all the extra commands allowed in AKC rally are a total no-go in WCRL. Layla heels pretty well, so she'd be fine in WCRL, but but dogs get away with appalling heeling (sort of "following along in the general vicinity of the handler") in AKC rally, which would just point you out in WCRL. And WCRL courses are longer, with harder signs than AKC. (though that may change with the changes to AKC "Masters" Rally starting next fall) So there are advantages to the venues that allow food in the ring, but there are also things that make it harder. CDSP "Starter Novice" isn't harder than AKC "Beginner Novice", but CDSP Novice includes a recall over a jump, and CDSP Open includes a half-ring go-out, neither of which are required in AKC. So there are trade-offs. I think the BIGGEST advantage you have in CDSP Obedience is not that you can have food in the ring, but that you can use "diet words of praise" during your run, which are not allowed in AKC. At least for Kodi, I KNOW that helps him stay connected better than in AKC Obedience, where it's all silence except for the commands.

I never thought of that, but she DID look awfully formal and "Lady-like!"
