Anal gland surgery update

Django had his surgery yesterday. Everything went well. His anal glands were obliterated, impossible to drain which was why he kept getting infections. Had a rough night last night, pain medication was not working. Was able to get a hold of the vet and she prescribed another medication for sedation, rough 7 hours but he finally fell asleep at 10:00 at night on the couch. Snuggled up next to him the entire night, didn't have the heart to move him once he fell asleep. Took pain meds this morning, working but not 100%. He won't walk, i think it's painful due to the stitches on the back end and every time I put him down he runs and then attempts to scoot which is a big NO! Running behind him to stop him from scooting. Hopefully today will be a little better, just want him to sleep all day. His appetite was good and he's taking his meds with turkey so that's a plus. Waiting for call from vet this morning.

Poor Django! He and Pixel can recover together. She had a rough night too. This morning, she just wants me to stay RIGHT with her. If I move away from her for a minute, she starts to cry. If she moves the wrong way, something hurts and she steals in pain and tries to run away from it. I can't give her her second dose of pain meds until noon time. :(

I am glad Django's surgery went well but so sorry he is having so much pain and discomfort. I hope he feels better soon. Sorry for Miss Pixel too. So awful for us when our dogs are hurting like this because there is only so much we can do until they are feeling better. Healing prayers for both of your cuties.

Poor Pixie. There is nothing worse then counting the hours before you can give them pain meds again. Django was ok when i held him but as soon as I put him down he was crying in pain. I too won't move an inch, he's sleeping now and I don't want to do anything to rock the boat! LOL. Hope things improve for the two of us as the week progresses.

Poor little guy! :( So sorry he is hurting. I don't know if it's a havanese thing but Sophie is definitely the most pain sensitive dog I've had (a great dane and 2 longhaired doxies in the past, all very stoic). So it's a new thing for me too to have a baby actually crying out it's heart breaking. Praying Django and Pixel both get past the pain stage FAST!

Day 5, managing Django's pain. The first few days the pain was from the surgery , now it's from the healing. Trying to wean him off the Trazedone. This is my saving grace at night, allowing us both to have good night sleep.

He's pooped yesterday (sorry, I know, TMI) but that's always a plus after this surgery. Back to the vet tomorrow to remove the sutures. I think once those are removed he will feel freer to walk about, run, go up the stairs. Right now we are carrying him everywhere. No jumping, running, stairs, etc. He hasn't gone for a walk since Tuesday. Overtime he attempts to take more than just a couple of steps he stops and sits, i think it's very uncomfortable on the back end.

This was by far the most difficult recovery and we've been through a lot in the last 12 years. We had an awesome vet, no incontinence which is a huge possibility after this surgery. All in all, this too will be behind us and once again, Django has rallied!

So glad to hear Django is on the road to revery and is feeling a bit better. I bet things will go faster once his stitches are out!!!

Well, I spoke too soon. Took Django to have his stitches removed Monday and he was screaming and moving so much they had to sedate him in order not to hurt him while removing stitches. Made his body limp but poor thing felt every thing.

Touch day, gave him one more pain med. Things are not moving along well. He appears to still be in a lot of pain. I thought maybe he was having a sort of withdrawal from all the meds so after a talk with the vet, we agreed to give him one more pain med last night, half the dose and only one of the 2 meds. He slept through the night until 3:00 this morning. Then, everything changed. Hasn't been able to get comfortable. Whining, crying, running from pillow to pillow, very sad. I called the vet, concerned that what's going on might not have anything to do with the anal gland surgery, he should be on the mend at this point. Somethings not right. Got an appointment this afternoon. Thank goodness for cell phones, got great video from last night as a visual. Hope whatever it is can be fixed. He just crashed on his pillow, i think last night has caught up with him.
