Django just can't last the long grooming sessions like he use to and I love my groomer but she always wants Django's haircut to be perfect. I've told her, "You've got an hour. He just can't stand for much longer." When I put a time restriction on his grooming, she's rushing, he's groomed poorly (my fault of course). Trying to figure out the best way to handle this. Django has such a thick coat that it takes her an hour and a half to groom him. I've tried grooming him every 4 weeks instead of 5 but it's the same situation.
She's really great, has been with us for the last 11 years, but my poor dog just can't stand there for his long grooming session any more. Even if I schedule a feet, fanny and face in-between he's still grizzly by the 4-5 week period. I even looked into the mobile groomer who I have used in the past when my groomer was out of commission and she's fast and amazing, however, my dog should have a bordatello shot which I won't give him so, I'm kind of stuck with my great groomer. Any suggestions?
I don't know...Can she do his feet, legs, and underside first while he's still standing and later the head and face with him lying down?
Maybe the back after some 15 min. breaks where he can rest in his bed? I feel bad for him and can understand that he can only take standing still for short periods at a time.
We have a home groomer who is just the best. Our groomer always gives Scout and Truffles rest and potty breaks during grooming. She always notices the little signs that they might need a break. I know she has mentioned how grooming dogs sometimes has to change for their comfort due to aging. Molly's idea of having the mobile groomer come into your home is a great idea. The groomer may not agree to come into your home because of their insurance coverage.
Do you think you could learn to groom him yourself? Then you can do short sessions at a time as he can tolerate them. I'm just learning myself with Sophie and expect her to look like I do when I first get up in the morning until I have more practice under my belt. I feel for you with the grooming sessions it's so much to ask of a dog to take it for that long.
What cut do you have your groomer doing? Some lengths are faster than others. Sounds weird but it's true. Does she have other clients in your area where maybe she could go to in between "sessions". For instance start Django, do the rough cut or body. Leave and do the other client and then return to finish Django. Seems complicated and you would probably have to be on someone else's schedule. This would be how I would want it though. Talk to your groomer. Get ideas from her to find out what she is flexible doing.
The idea of the mobile groomer was great, reached out to her, but no go. Liability issue and all her equipment is in the van, too difficult to pack it up and come inside.
I think the idea of breaks in-between is great. He's in a puppy cut so it's a pretty easy groom however she uses scissors a lot for the perfect look. She puts him in the tub about 10 minutes after she runs a quick clipper around him which he enjoys. I will have her give him a break after his bath and blow-dry before she starts the serious grooming with the scissors and then in-between the final grooming. I think this might be the answer. She only grooms 3 dogs a day and she's all over the place so coming and going would be difficult plus I think it would create more stress for Django. Thanks for the tips
I would find a home groomer for Django. It would be much easier on him knowing you are there. Our groomer brings everything with her. It's really worked out well for Scout and Truffles.
Django's groomer is a home groomer. She's been with us for the past 10 years. We just need to make a few tweaks to keep him happy during that long hour of grooming.
Oh....I missed that part. Maybe taking a few more rest periods will help. That's what the groomer does here.
