Dog Park Fun

We had our carpets cleaned today, so the boys had to stay out of the house for a bit. While Mario went to spend the day with grandma and grandpa, Nino got to run some errands with me on my day off. Off to our pet store to use our coupons that expire the 30th, to Home Depot to pick up some paint samples, and then I decided to check out the dog park that opened in our city a couple weeks ago. It was my first dog park experience, as other dogs aren't really Mario's thing, and I was very wary of bringing Nino before I knew his recall was as good as it should be.

I was so pleasantly surprised. There is a big all-breed area, but for the time being, I took him into the 1 acre small-breed-only area because it was much more open (lots of brush in the bigger area). We were the only ones there, so I grabbed the bag of training treats I keep in my car and made it a learning opportunity. Nino was SOLID. As soon as his leash was off, he was out like a rocket, but every time I called him, he came sprinting back to my side until I released him. The place was fraught with distractions: highway sounds, new smells, and his absolute favorite thing, leaves.

Every day, I'm astonished by just how good he is. I have no real interest in obedience, but if he keeps it up, I may just be forced to put a CD on him, or at least a RN hehe. I'll try to put some videos up once I get around to it.

Nice. I don't have my own fenced in area for my dogs to play, so I'm at the dog park at least a few evenings a week. They get to know the other dogs, have their special friends, etc. It's fun to observe.

Lola is great with recall, but my boy likes to test things, and you can see her conflict as she starts to run to me, then look back to see where big brother is. She'll look at him, then at me, then at him....she always come to me, but has that five second hesitation in the park. All I have to do is head to the gate, and Watson is running towards me like a bullet. Thank goodness for velcro dogs.
