So we went 2 hrs away to a cabin last week and left Lily for the longest she has been left over 2 hrs in her ex pen. When we got back she wasn't in it and I thought someone broke in and stole her. Few min later she came around corner. Guess she climbed or jumped out. Little stinker. Next day we left her out and barracaded the stairs, we found her upstairs on the bed. Not sure how she accomplished that. The first pic is at the cabin where she escaped from , the others are just places she likes to hide.
Any expen or gate that has the bars going horizontally across can make it easy for a climber to get out if they are inclined to do so. My expen had holes that look like little diamonds, so not as easy to get a foothold on. Sounds like you have your work cut out for you to find an escape proof pen or gate. Good luck!
Once you have a climber, you are in trouble. And it really isn't safe to either lead her loose or allow her to climb to the top and tumble down the other side. (or jump, which ever she is doing!) I'm afraid you re going to have to either get a covered ex-pen (They make covers for metal ex-pens, but I know people who have made their own covers for plastic ex-pens like yours by zip-tying plastic lattice to the top) or keep her crated when you aren't home to supervise the little monkey!
Good idea about cover. I've left her plenty of times and even today at home for 1-2 hrs in her ex pen and she is fine. I think maybe it was a new environment and she was nervous. If we ever travel again, will definitely have to figure something else out for the pen. ?
Layla did that at around 3 months of age :surprise:. It looks like I had the same ex-pen as the one in your picture. I ended up buying some heavy area rug gripper stuff (like what you put under rugs so they don't slip) at JoAnn's. My husband made a roof out of it and zip tied it to the top of the ex-pen. To her dismay, that totally cooled her jets, but at least she was safe!!! We couldn't take it with us when we traveled, but I didn't want to anyways. You can also buy a roof for them and if that's an Iris brand, I know for sure they sell them on Amazon. Good luck.
We have the exact same ex-pen...no puppy yet, but soon. We bought the cover for it from Amazon, but we intend to put a nice heavy blanket on top of that cover when we have to leave for a short time. It will also give a little bit more of a sense of security. Now...we haven't tried it yet, but we were told that this could be a good way to keep him not only a bit safer in his ex-pen if we are out but also feeling a bit more secure as well. Maybe that is worth a try. I agree with krandall...You certainly don't want her jumping out of that pen....too many tempting problems to get into.....and the fall itself could harm her possibly. She is a darling little character!
This breed is so smart. Leo jumped out of his xpen (around 26" high) a month ago so we had to buy the Iris 34" high pen instead. He is somehow able to open our door to our study as well. He has shredded so much paper there that I'm thinking of changing the door knob style!
My Lola, at twelve weeks, had already scaled two expensive ex-pens, and at four months was already leaping up, muscling herself up and flipping over the baby gate in the kitchen. I had to remove it to keep her from hurting herself. I have a very small open house. When she was under a year and a half, I had to have her in a crate if I wasn't able to supervise her or she'd get into trouble. I now have her in my bedroom with a closed door at night or if i'm leaving the house for more than a few minutes. She's a happy, busy trouble maker.
Mine don't get into trouble much, and none are climbers. But even though they are all adults now (well, Panda isn't really, but she's over a year) they ALL get gated in my office when I'm out to the house. There is nothing they can get in trouble with there, and they have their beds, little box and water. If any were climbers, the door would be shut! I think dogs loose in the house is an accident waiting to happen.
Glad to know these smart Havs are alike. Little tricksters. I so wish I had a camera set up to see her escape.l may get one for when I leave her at home, be fun to watch her. ( like secret life of pets. Ha) do any of you have one? What do yall use if have one set up? She is totally content when I leave her in it at home but isn't left for more than 2 hrs. I did order the cover though. I love this site and seeing all the variety of Havenses pics.
We did set up a camera of Layla's antics while we were gone. If it wasn't so scary, it would have been funny (we did laugh about it after we had her roof on the ex-pen)! My husband just set the iPad on a table near her ex-pen in our living room. We left the house like normal and came back about 30 min later and sure enough, the little stinker was out and under the bed in the spare bedroom shredding the mesh stuff that's on the bottom of box springs and very happy with herself >. When we looked at the video she was shimmying up the rungs on the ex-pen and using the wall to balance against, then she'd just plop over the side to the floor. She was only 12 or 13 weeks old and very tiny, I'm amazed and very thankful that she didn't hurt herself. When I called my breeder for help, she was amazed and said she'd never had a climber before, haha.

One time when I visited the Kings, they had a young litter... maybe 6 weeks, and I helped Pam reconfigure the whelping area, because she had ONE deterimined escape artist in the litter! The ones who want to do it can start young!
Little Layla the escape artist too!! ?She's so cute all that black fur and white paws. I bet that was interesting to watch! Good idea w the ipad. I'll try that sometime just to watch her. I put her in it while I'm home too and she just lays around. Lily has never tried at home to escape. But at the cabin, the pen was up against a couch and at home it's a few inches from the wall. Lily gets under our bed and chews on that stuff under the mattress too.
