Can anyone tell me anything about these vitamins? My breeder will extend the puppy's health guarantee from 3 to 5 years of you can prove the puppy was getting the vitamins for all of that time.

Thanks!

Your breeder benefits from you feeding the vitamins. You have to be really careful adding vitamins if you are feeding a well-balanced commercial food, because they ALREADY have the needed vitamins included. Some vitamins are toxic at too-high levels. The ones that aren't toxic when fed in too-high levels just get peed out, and are not used.

I'm still not sure what I'm going to feed him. I bought a small bag of puppy orijen just to have on hand. Ideally I would like to feed freeze dried or dehydrated raw. I'm struggling with trying to figure out which has the most bang for my buck. It seems as if the honest kitchen does, but I don't know the quantity that he would be fed to know how long the bags of primal, sojo's, or HK would last.

If I feed him one of those brands, those are considered well balanced, right?

Thanks!

Yup. I haven't used Primal, but have used both THK and Sojo's. I decided to stay with THK, because they never source anything from China. Solo's told me (at that time... things can always change) that they TRIED to source locally as much as possible, but that at times they had to source their trace mineral mix from "other places", and couldn't define "other places" to my satisfaction. The dogs liked both equally, and they seemed similar in cost.

I would still be using THK if it weren't for Kodi's food intolerances, and the need for a limited ingredient diet for him.

I believe the Nuvet products are kind of like a pyramid deal where they seller gets kickbacks. I had a groomer that was pushing these vitamins and said she had a client with poodles that had eye staining and they took these and the staining completely disappeared. I was quite skeptical. I actually purchased a bottle and gave Willow a few but decided to stop. She didn't have any reaction or anything but it just seemed kind of phony and they contain so many strange herbs and whatnot. Plus they are expensive.

This explains why my breeder tried to get me to give vitamin supplements with both dogs I purchased from her. I have to admit that I couldn't be bothered with it and have a hard enough time remembering to add proviable dc to their meals. I still have some dog food confusion going on. I have a cockapoo that needs to be on a limited/rare protein diet due to severe allergies/skin conditions. I really want all three of my dogs eating the same food and the hydrolyzed protein diet the vet put her on wasn't appropriate for the other two.

I read on these forums that kibble is bad or something, but Raffy will literally starve himself rather than eat Primal, and Primal doesn't have a rare enough protein for Shady. I've tried Zignature canned food as I can get it in kangaroo and lamb, which are both rare enough proteins for Shady. However, NONE of them will touch the kangaroo, and only Sassy will eat the lamb (barely). I've finally decided to go with Zignature kibble kangaroo or lamb, which all three will eat. It solves the problem of feeding three different types of food, addresses the allergy issues, and curtails the arguments my husband and I were having over how to feed them 'properly'. Sometimes a woman just has to throw up her hands and say, "Fine."

The "best" food is one your dogs do well on, and which works for your family. It souds like you've already done that math. :)

These suppliments have no regulation and there is no way of knowing what your dog is getting. As Dave and Karen have stated they are just a gimmick and if you are feeding a good quality dog food they are totally unnecessary. It kind of makes me angry that a breeder is hawking this stuff, they should know better. These could actually be harmful to your dog over the long term.

I am using 4 health kibble for puppies, and 4 health wet food, grain free, and it is what the breeder used. It is distributed by tractor supply, she loves it, I give her 1/4 cup + 1 tbsp wet twice a day. She is gaining weight, active and seems healthy. She is 4 1/2 month old and weighs 7.1 lb at the vet this week. Anyone think this is ok? I don't want to jeprodize her health, but I also am on a limited budget and she seems fine with it.

Many dogs live their entire lives on grocery store kibble. We all like to do the best we can for our dogs, and people here on the forum maybe a little more than most. :) But the important thing is to feed the best food you can, on your budget, that also agrees with your dog. It sounds like this is agreeing with her, so don't worry about it! :)
