Age of puppy for medications?

At what age do people begin giving their puppies heart worm and/or flea and tick medication?

This is another article by Dr. Dodds, and what she and I have talked about in personal communication at the Havens national specialty a couple of years ago.

Dr. Jean Dodds' Pet Health Resource Blog | Heartworm: A real and present danger

We live in the north, with winters too harsh for mosquitoes. We use heartworm preventative for only 6 months, generally starting mid-may, and we give it on a 45 day cycle, MARKED ON THE CALENDAR, so no forgetting! ...And, obviously, they are tested for Heartworm in the spring, before we begin dosing them.

I started Rocky on Nexgard but switched to Bravecto when he was 6 months. We are in VA and live in the county, surrounded by the woods. Ticks are abundant and Bravecto works really well. It supposedly last for 3 months but I give Rocky 1 pill every two months during the spring / summer (because of lone star ticks) and back to every three months during late fall / winter (per vet's advice).

I don't use any feed-through flea and tick meds.

I don't like the idea of those chemicals going through my dogs' digestive tracts. It's bad enough that we have to use anything at all. I use Advantix II, and use it as infrequently as possible.

Oral meds can stay in the system for 4 and up to 12 weeks and you have no way to remove them. Then consider how long drugs like Bravecto have been on the market overall, and what their safety track record looks like, compared to something like plain Frontline.
