Introducing puppy to 13 year old Maine coon cat

Hi everyone. We are getting excited to bring Penelope home on April 28th! First, thank you to the forum. I am learning so much reading old posts and all.
We have ex pens set up a crate in my bedroom and one in my home office and all the supplies and toys a puppy could possibly need!!! Lol!!!
One thing that is a big unknown is how my big Maine coon will react to his new sister. Riley is like a puppy trapped in a cat's body. He sits and begs on command and is truly a gentle giant at almost 20 pounds.
He's 13 but will always be my baby. We said good bye to two older cats and Riley has never been an only child.
Part of me thinks that having a furry friend will be great for both Penelope and Riley, but I've never mixed dogs and cats before in my home.
Any suggestions on introducing them is greatly appreciated.
We have baby gates prepared.

The key thing is to make sure Riley is always able to get out of the puppy's reach when necessary, either on other side of a gate or up high. Cassie adores our cat and has played with him, games of chase etc, since she arrived, but she can be a little brat as well so he needs to be able to get out of her reach when she gets too rough. He will lie on top of a table and reach down to play with her but has always kept his claws in when he plays with her. Sometime she will be resting and he will climb down to get her started again. Just give them time and space to get to know each other and options for Riley to get away if needed.

Here is a picture of Cassie and her cat...she wears him out, but I love the way he will just lie down and rest right in front of her without a worry.

Our cat hates our dogs. She's 17 and pretty curmudgeonly when it comes to them. We just make it so she can always get away from them if she wants. They don;t ever do anything awful too her, they just act like dogs, and want to sniff her butt. She HATES that!

Cassie and your kitty are adorable! Thanks for your input. Riley will have lots of territory to escape to once Penelope is here. She will not have free run of the house for a long time.
He is quite curious and generally adaptable so fingers crossed they get along.
My female cat would not have tolerated a dog sniffing her butt either! She barely tolerated her feline brothers!

My cat, Nitro, was about 4 years old when baby Tucker arrived. They get along fine, with very occasional sibling squabbles. As the others have already mentioned, I think it will be fine as long as the cat can get away any time he/she wants to. In our house, Nitro is the "top dog," and Tucker knows it. If Tucker is in the spot on the couch that Nitro/cat wants, all she does is look at him and he moves!

Here are some photos of Tucker and Nitro.

These kitty/puppy pics are cuteness overload. So darn sweet. I love that they get along and have figured things out. At one point we had a dog, 2 cats and a parrot. No issues at all, everyone learned the pecking order. The parrot was the boss, he liked to chase the cats and they got out of his way, then the cats and then the dog, he had respect for both the cats and the parrot.

Thank you all! Your responses are alleviating my anxiety over the pending introduction. Knowing my cat, I really feel he will love the furry company once he gets used to the pup. He's so clingy to me and my husband since his kitty siblings passed.
Thanks again! I love the pictures!
