First outing without the puppy.....

Penelope has not been alone for more than a half hour or so and I've never left home with having someone home with her....
Today, we decided to go out for a quick lunch. I got her situated in her little playpen with a kong and some toys and we left. Here's what happened....

OH MY!!!!!!! Wow. How long was she out of her pen running around the house before you get back?

Poor girl! My pup got pretty used the the whole I have to leave him to go to work thing, he only barks for about 3-5 mins. I think he must just nap, every time I get home he is in such a calm state and I'm greeted with a big yawn and he sits and looks at me until I come over to his pen to get him out :P

She was only out for an hour. Luckily her pen is in the family room and we have that room puppy proofed and gated. So, she was still fairly contained.

That's too funny that video. Oh my... It reminded me of my last dog. I left for 1/2 hour when she was 2 days in our house and when I came back she was out and I had clean up ... Seeing that video made me laugh. Plus there in the crate for their protection too. Electrical cords, etc. You have to watch like a hawk. One thing that got me thinking and nervous is the crying. We are in temporary housing until our house gets built... I hope the neighbors don't complain. Luckily it should be done by Sept. I read that you should go out at first for 5 minutes, come back in once they quiet down and keep doing this for an entire day. They said they learn that you really are coming back. She was probably just scared.

She does ok when she knows we are in the house, but I guess she didn't hear us and freaked.
I left the tv on hoping she would settle in.

You know, the first thing I thought when I turned on the video (BEFORE "it" happened ) was, "Boy the spacing in that pen looks too wide for a little puppy!!!"

Pixel could walk freely through the dog gates we got to confine her in either our kitchen or my office when she was little. We cut pieces of plexiglas and drilled holes in the corners so that we could zip-tie them over the spaces that were big enough for her to fit through. manufacturers seem not to be aware of HOW tiny some toy breed puppies are!

It's really REALLY important to start actually leaving the house for short periods of time. They absolutely know when you are in the house, even when out of sight. Their noses are incredibly sensitive. As a for instance, Kodi knows IMMEDIATELY whether there are cookies in my pocket, or whether all the cookies are now gone. It doesn't matter that the pocket had cookies in it 15 seconds earlier. He can tell.

When you want to leave the house,

1. put her in her crate

2. cover the crate with a blanket

3. in the beginning, come back within 1/2 hour (get take out)

My Goodness! The Lil Rascal!
Good idea to put the crate in a gated off puppy proof room. I did the same, although we had no escapes. I was paranoid about it so made sure she would be ok if she did escape!
At first I was thinking you may have had the crate/pen with too many horizontal bars and she climbed out- but nope. Great pen! Just too much vertical space for right now!

Perry has always been content as long as he knows we're in the house, but with leaving the house I was sure he was never going to get over the barking (since it started the minute we left the house), but now he seems fine (I don't have a baby cam so not sure if he starts later, but my housekeeper who gets there about 3 hours after I leave says that he's quiet when she arrives). I guess he finally realizes that we're coming back.

The only day I had a report from our guards that he was carrying on was last Friday and that could have been (a) because he heard the night guard come on duty (he doesn't like him) or (b) because he was left alone off schedule/ a lot longer than usual (my housekeeper had to leave early and I had a work commitment after work so didn't get home til late). Maybe he carries on when we're out, but he's quiet when we leave and he's quiet when we get back so I don't know.

The point I was trying to make was that there is hope that they'll get used to it - I honestly didn't think Perry would, he was showing no signs of stopping and then suddenly one day he 'got it'. He still barked if I left him alone, for example, on a Saturday when I went grocery shopping (not the usual weekday schedule), but even that - suddenly one day he stopped.
