Hi everyone! I'm Sheila and I adopted Isabel three weeks ago. She's 10 months old and 8 pounds. Adorable! Adorable!

We had a harrowing weekend at the emergency vet. She ate something in the trash and it came out of her...everywhere. Guess what though? She used a pee pad for the first time ever, when this mess started in the wee hours of the morning---she gave me the gift of putting her "output" on exactly right spot!!! I didn't think that she understood what those pads were for, despite weeks of putting her poo on the pad when she dropped it somewhere else.

She wasn't eating or drinking after 24 hours, so back to the vet we went today. This is my first puppy and I searched for rescue Havanese for months. I applied for 13 dogs. I was turned down because I had no fenced-in yard and I am not retired, and some lovely dogs just got adopted before I got there! In the end, I got Isabel from a respected breeder of show dogs who was happy to re-home an older puppy who was too small to show or to breed. I am so happy that I picked this breed! I teach at a university and she's been going to some of my classes (and stealing water bottles). The students are all doggie-deprived and they are so emotional about puppies. One girl started crying when she picked her up. It is exam time and they are stressed and they miss their dogs! It is a great pleasure to be Izzy's chauffeur and human companion. I look forward to meeting and learning from all of y'all (the most inclusive form of the pronoun "y'all")!

Welcome! How ridiculous that rescue wouldn't let you have a puppy because you didn't have a fence! Lots and LOTS of people keep Havanese in apartments, and walk their dogs on leashes. We didn't have a fenced yard for the first 5 years we had Kodi, and I don't think many dogs are more loved or better cared for than he is! Silly!

I'm so glad you found a good breeder who was willing to work with you! Enjoy your cute girl, and I hope she is feeling better soon!

Your students must think the world of you! As an undergrad who lived on campus last year, I can affirm that the doggy deprivation is a very real thing. Oh how I wish my professors would have brought theirs in.

Anywho, welcome to the forum, and welcome to the breed!

thanks Heather. I can't figure out how to post the pictures. I uploaded one as a profile picture and then uploaded others in an album but it seems that no one can see them? Do you know what I need to do?

thank you for waving to me!

:welcome: Sheila and Isabel! She is a cutie!
I live in an urban environment and don't have a yard but it's not been a problem because I take Emmie and myself for lots of walks and adventures everyday (before & after work). If I had a yard I probably wouldn't get her out as much so not having one is better for both of us. :)

Me, too. I have a small urban patio. Good for doing business, but not getting exercise so we walk before work and in the evenings. Also, we are lucky enough to have a dog park for dogs 20 lbs and under not far from us so we go there periodically. If I had more yard and I might not be so inclined to take as many walks as we do.

Izzy is so cute. I am with everyone on the fence thing. I have had Ollie for over two years and Hershey since March and we just finally got fully fenced in this summer. It was never an issue as they get lots and lots of walkies. They are never outside unsupervised and that is even with a fence. We have coyotes here and other critters including Grey Owls so I watch and am with them at all times. Being fenced in does not a good dog owner make and not having one is a ridiculous reason for denying adoption. Glad you have given Izzy such a wonderful home.
