Looking to Adopt a Puppy

Hi Everyone,
I am new to the Forum but over the last month or two in doing research on the breed I have read many posts from different years. After a lot of research I have found the breeder I want to adopt my first Havanese from and have been in touch with her. So exciting and can't wait to have a new puppy.

But in my research I came across information on Havanese coming from Europe as well. It seems the European breeders do far less health testing. Does anyone know why and is there a difference in the breed coming from Europe rather than being in the United States?

Thank you.

European breeders DO do less testing. And since we have a very small gene pool overall, I think this is a mistake. But that is the way they do it over there. The FCI standard is also a little different from the AKC/HCA standard. As a result,European Havanese dogs do have a different"look". They tend to be a little longer backed than North American Havanese, and their coats tend to be a little heavier in texture.

Good dogs can be found on both continents, and there is lots of "cross pollination". But unless you were an established breeder, looking for something specific from the European gene pool, there is absolutely NO benefit to going outside NA for a puppy, Staying here will cost you a LOT less, and you will have the benefit of getting to know your breeder.

Length of back is the big thing I've noticed in differences between European and North American Havs. I don't know what the FCI standard says regarding that, but the AKC accepted standard says slightly longer than tall, and the Hav that went BOS at Crufts was almost twice as long as it was tall.

I prefer the NA look to the EU look quite a bit. We have a couple imports in the ring around here and they don't do very well. I've seen a decent number of breeders importing for the colors, both reds and chocolates, but like Karen said, it really isn't worth purchasing a pet quality dog from overseas when there are many great breeders stateside and in Canada.
