Hi All,

My wife and I brought home the newest member of our family on Saturday - an 8 week old Hav named Branson. We're really excited and love him to death. Really glad to see that there is a forum full of people here offering lots of helpful info.

I'm debating on litter box training since he seems to have to pee every 5 minutes My concern is that if we put him in his ex pen with a litter box he'll never learn to hold it and we'll always have to keep the litter box around, which we don't really want. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Sorry if that question should be posted somewhere else, but I don't have that ability yet! Also, here's a picture of our little guy:

Well, I'm of the opinion that dogs should not need to "hold it" beyond what is comfortable for them any more than we should. If someone is not going to be around to let them out when they need to go, they should have an indoor potty option of some sort.

Valid point. Thanks!

Welcome! :wave:Branson is adorable! We did have wee pads in Scout's ex-pen but took him to the backyard every two hours. He caught on quickly so I don't think you will have a problem. They key is taking him out every 1-2 hrs. 😊
Thanks for the info. I try to take him out as much as possible. If I let him walk around on the floor he seems to pee every time I turn my back, but he doesn't do it if he's sitting on the couch with us. I think wee pads in the ex pen are going to be a must.

Truffles didn't like going outside at all. It took one year to finally get her to go outside with encouragement. I thought it would be follow the leader with Scout and that didn't happen. She was trained to use wee pads in the beginning and will still use one if it is out. Scout will whimper or tap the glass door to go out. Truffles will just sit next to the door and wait so I have to watch her.

We brought our pup home at 10 weeks. Prior to that he was in a play pen with other littermates with pee pads all over. We used the pee pads in an expen with crate for first few days. I then made the decision that I did not want him to go indoors. We had to take him out every 1-2 hours during the day and every 3-4 hours at night. It was pretty rough with the night routine, trust me. Then at about 3 1/2 months he went through the night! It helped to move him from sleeping in a crate in our room to sleeping in a crate downstairs. As a rule, he now goes out ever 3-4 hours. He has a crate with the door open in an expen in the kitchen and never goes in that area. I will say that if I let him free roam in the house and he is not recently empty he will go inside, still. We have a long tether in the familyroom, that has hardwood, where he can be while we watch tv. My pup can sneak and goes inside on the livingroom or diningroom carpet in a blink of an eye. So, our progress is not that great; but we are working on it. Trust me, I have thought many times that a designated pee pad inside would be much easier but thus far have decided to keep trying.

Good luck! The problem is that it is MUCH easier to fade an indoor potty OUT than it is to re-introduce it, if you've given up, and are still having accidents in the house. Many just refuse to go back to it.

My husband and I took Scout to the backyard for several months. It was definitely a very rough time because I work 12 hrs. I was so tired! It really was worth it in the end. He really didn't have accidents inside and only wanted to go outside. I just couldn't face the every two hours again with Truffles. Plus she was so small and I was concerned about her in the backyard. I tried to train her to use the wee pads. She did learn, but unfortunately would always end up go on the edge of the pad. 😒 I tried to transition her to the backyard when she was older and it was very difficult. If I had to do over again...I would have trained her from the beginning to go outside. It would of saved a lot of time cleaning!
