11 and 1/2 year old Havanese

Hi everyone. I have a Havanese that was diagnosed with congestive heart failure 6 months ago. Lasix(diuretic) has been increased a few times due to relapses. Anyone else dealing with this?

My babies are still young, so no problems, but I certainly feel for you, and wish you and your doggie helpful answers and healing.

He has a leaky mitral valve. I'm to monitor his respiration rate while he's at rest. It should be between 30-40. He's on Pimobendan, Spirolactanone, enalapril, and Lasix for his heart. I feel like this is young for a Havanese to have this issue.

Hello Margaret. I'm so sorry to hear about your little one. My first Havanese Sparky had CHF. He had a grade 6 murmur at 14 years old. Twice daily he received Lasix, Coreg & Vetmedin. I know it is very difficult to see our furkids not feeling well. If you have any questions you can PM me.

I sent you a message Margaret, but just checked and don't think it transferred. I'll try again.

His name is Ozzy. He goes for a repeat chest X-ray Friday because the one last Friday showed changes from the one in December at the animal emergency hospital and the vet had me increase his diuretic to 3x a day for 3 days. He takes the following Meds daily: Lasix, enalapril, vetmendin, spiralactanone for his heart. Potassium bromide 2x a day for his partial seizures that he's had since age 2. Three different eye drops for his autoimmune dry eye disease also.

I'm so sorry that Ozzy has so many health problems, Margaret. While the breed is, on AVERAGE, long-lived and healthy, averages are just that. There will be individuals who are sicker or healthier than average, and who will live longer or shorter periods of time. It just stinks when a dog we love is one of the ones that drew a short straw.

While none of mine have any heart problems, two are young, and one is "middle aged" (almost 8). And heart problems are not unknown in the breed... which is why hearts or on the list for testing for breeding Havanese. Of course, any animal can develop geriatric heart problems, I do know (or know of) a handful of Havanese who have developed heart murmurs at a fairly early age, and several of these have gone on to develop significant heart disease that required treatment as they got older. I certainly hope you are able to manage Ozzy's heart problems for a good long time!
