New havanese owners

Hello everyone. We are soon to be new havanese owners. We'll get our little 10wk old "Bella" on April 1. We're both retired and haven't had a dog for 25 years. We want to do outside potty training from day one and plan to use a pack n play for her crate, as well as our mudroom for larger restricted area. We're not able to restrict with baby gates, etc because our downstairs is very open. I'd appreciate any advice and guidance you have for us.

Welcome to the forum! I also have a very open floor plan. I potty trained for outside using a crate. I also used a baby play yard as an expen. I could move it around easily as needed and it also opened up into an extra wide gate to keep her from certain rooms with wide openings. I also use my mudroom as a larger area I can gate her off in with her crate, food, and toys when I am gone for several hours. For potty training purposes, just remember to keep the area she is allowed in very small. Otherwise, she will probably go potty inside. Good luck with your new little girl.

Welcome to the forum, and good luck! If you have the time, search the forum for the answer to any question you have. Also, if you have the time BEFORE APRIL 1, read these two resources:

Welcome, what fun. Just make sure where you set up the playpen area you put something under it in case of accidents. It is going to happen no matter how diligent you are and you want to protect your floors. Cannot wait to see puppy pics.

Congratulations!!!! I can only imagine how joyful it must be! I've been doing quite a bit of training research lately myself. In addition to the forum some other helpful resources might be:

-books and DVD's from your local library (some you can check out online)
- If you have Amazon Prime, I just watched a few great free training videos and paid for some also
-Netflix might have some also
-YouTube has a ton of free training videos by professional trainers
-And I like this site:

I hope this helps. I would absolutely love to hear about your new puppy journey so I hope you'll post.
