Hoping for Havanese

I've been on the hunt for a havanese breeder in Ontario. I've been researching breeders listed on the Havanese Fanciers website. We are in the GTA and there are quite a few breeders within a couple hours drive, however I am not having any luck finding many reviews. Any advice or recommendations are welcome!

Ontario sure is big! Minnesota borders on Ontario, but NOT on the Greater Toronto Area! Best of luck to you!

Thanks all! It's very exciting and I'm looking forward to visiting some breeders. A lot of websites are not updated so I think I will just need to start making calls and arranging appointments

The best thing you can do is roll up your sleeves and dive in. Make sure you have lots of questions for the breeders with respect to their testing, breeding practices contract info etc. There is a post on this forum about what to look for in a good breeder and reading that will help you. I would guess there are members here who can offer some names as well. Enjoy your search that is part of the fun. Good luck and let us know what happens as you go through this.

Thank you! Yes, it's definitely exciting. I've grown up with golden retrievers so this will be a new experience for me!

We used Amistosa Havanese in Ajax, ON and couldn't be happier with the little guy we got from them. Feel free to PM me if you'd like more information about our experience with the breeder.

During my quest for a Hav breeder, I found some accusations regarding some serious unethical breeding practices about a kennel called Misty Trails in Canada. A woman named Dr. Spilchuk stated she purchased dogs with genetic defects from Misty Trails and that the breeder then altered the pedigree lineage on the kennel's website following the incidents.

I have no personal knowledge of the validity of the alleged claims, but I would definately read this if I were considering that breeder:

https://www.buyhavanese.com/featured...-havanese-dogs

https://www.complaintsboard.com/comp...s-c820013.html

There is also some great information I found on that website regarding considerations when choosing a breeder.

Hope this is helpful to you in some way .

Thanks a bunch! Yes, researching breeders has definitely been eye opening and kinda like my new part time job! There's a lot of info out there. Apparently the Havanese Fanciers of Canada club sets a requirement for healthcare and will even inspect the homes of breeders so I found that, and the recommendations of people from this forum, helpful in getting a shortlist for me to start at. Good luck in your search too

You are most welcome and I can SO relate to the breeder search being a part time job! It was somewhere around a year for me and it is such a great feeling when you finally find one! Then you have more time to research other things like training, etc. It certainly was an education into an entire subculture that I had no prior awareness of!

Best to you and I hope you'll post updates!

P.S. Love your username!
