Hello..
We are a bit nervous and are new to Havanese. in the past we were avid Maltese lovers but would like a bit sturdier dog for a therapy dog someday.
While we have been shopping for a red/chocolate we fell for a black/white puppy who has some chocolatey red tones in his coat. Dam is a great white great champion and dad is a red champion. Great temperament and lineage and since colors are so unpredictable..temperament and the breeder seems far more important

Wondering how to tell if the coat will change and far more importantly would like to see if there are best trainers around in the CT area.

This forum seems wonderful so we've joined up to connect with others who love their Havis..
thank you.

Welcome to the forum. I previously had several Shetland Sheepdogs and one sweet precious Maltese. I switched it up and chose Havanese this time. He is 10 months old. Similar challenges as Maltese in terms of housebreaking and grooming. But sweet, loyal, beautiful like a Maltese. Will say, with adolescence, I am challenged. Good luck and pm if you need to.

If you google havanese colors you will see a lot of color change between puppyhood and adulthood. My Irish Pied sable will likely be a cream and white dog with dark tips on his tail and ears as an adult. The sable has the most color change. I would think your baby would get browner as he aged, from looking at the puppy to adult pictures on the website. I don't think there is anything wrong with a color preference in a dog. As one breeder I found stated, personality and temperament are part of a particular breed of dog. You can visit puppies and the shyest seeming one could be the most aggressive puppy, with a tummy ache. It is just the same as the way we judge strange people based on behavior when we don't know if they have a family member has just died, or if they simply need to adjust their medication dosage.
I don't think it is wrong to choose a dog based on appearance, though many disagree. You are going to be looking at the animal for 15 years.

Welcome!

When I picked out my puppy I went intending to get a girl (she had 2 girls and a boy left to pick from) and anything but black and white just because my other two dogs are black and white
I picked a boy and black and white [emoji23] he was the one I clicked with the most And he definitely liked me a lot more than the girls did although one girl was beautiful! I loved her colors she didn't like me at all and wouldn't leave the breeders side
I'm so glad I got sprocket he is the perfect dog for me so I agree with not looking for color only sprocket is 7months old now and he just started to change color maybe 2 weeks ago his black has a lot of brown in it now which makes me happy :) hoping it will keep getting browner lol both his parents were black and white and most of the puppies were black and white except the two girls not picked
I'm not sure you can tell if they will change colors I didn't expect sprocket to at all I do think all sables lighten up but besides that it's more a wait and see
