Hi...yes it was me...Thanks for noticing. Certainly missed being here and keeping in touch. Have had some trouble with my eyes (cataract surgery), which was complicated by an existing condition (macular degeneration) that I need to get shots in both of my eyes. Getting better but it is still hard to focus sometimes. The. a sisters are well

Thanks for your reply, again. It was very hard losing Bailey last summer and I know that Tyler felt it too and was very confused as neither of them had ever been "only" dogs before. One consolation on losing Bailey is that he was 15 years old and we h ad a good life with him. He was my true Velcro boy. Well, enjoy your bath time girls. As you said, see you on the forum.
BTW-I have gotten several more PMs asking for the grooming instructions. Kudos to Shauna!

Ok... This is how I do it... Got your message Mary and you are absolutely right about being retired and having more time.

We were retired (although I sometimes help my daughter with her two gift stores) when we got Izzy, the first one. Both of them were trained to go outside within matter of weeks...the second one had but two accidents in the house. Now with saying this I have to admit we were probably trained to let them out very often. We have a fenced in yard so it was so easy. They caught onto the bells in a very short time...and that was wonderful.

In all honesty I don't think a puppy was too much at all. You can bond better with a puppy and I bet there would be a training period with an adult dog anyway. It also might have some little problems that might be harder to overcome.

All in all I believe retirement is the best time and I really don't feel that my age has hampered in raising them. Wellllllllllll........ Except for the first hour upon rising, in the morning, I am really stiff and have a hard time bending down to pick them up for their morning cuddles. But a high foot stool or the bed, which they just hop up on, alleviates that problem. Hopefully this helps...although it is just my opinion and circumstances.
Have a great day and see you on the forum....
PS. Have you thought about getting another one now? I swear two are easier than one and the older one helped with socializing and even the potty training!

    Ok, it worked.

Yes you are right, I am 75 years old and have two Havanese. I think it is one of the best things I have done, for them and us.

Now the positive....they keep each other company, play, sleep and even seem to potty together (eat out of the same bowl even). The playing is usually rough housing and running around, a little to rough for me, but I guess they are just playing because they keep going back to each other. It is very entertaining to see them together and if one is good why not two. They also keep each other company when we have to leave for a bit.

The cons....Money...more expensive all around, vets, shots, heartworm, flea medicine and what if one would get sick (oh my I hope not), grooming. I do it myself for the most part and only have taken the little one once and Izzy couple of times. The equipment was expensive but well worth it in the long run.

It really doesn't seem like that much more work actually and so much more fun.
It was a little difficult at first, but the puppy was trained really quickly (with the bells), actually the last accident was when she was 12 weeks old and I think that was only the second accident she had. Now, the older one did not like her at first, the puppy wanted to play (she is a feisty one and Izzy is more layed back) so she was always running away from her...it took about two months for Izzy to lay down the law and make her behave. They now play and tumble all the time. Izzy also seemed to be somewhat depressed for a while, I think her nose was out of joint with having to share us. It all went back to normal but took about 4/5 months for all this to smooth out.

The only other thing I can say is that I do worry as I age (and they live, hopefully 15 years, will I be able to continue to care for them) There is always the chance that my health will decline and it would be difficult to keep up. So I have thought that maybe it was a little selfish to get another one. I am hoping they will keep me moving and therefore healthy and we can grow old together....smiling the whole time.

Sorry this is so lengthy and prob. full of mistakes, but I had to do it quickly before the laptop self destructs.
If you have any other questions please feel free....I can answer from my IPAd..
