To change the mood of the forum a bit, I thought of everyone telling what they read.

Who likes to read here? No, I do not mean the newspaper or gossip magazines. I am talking about avid book readers like me.
What are you reading now? What genres do you prefer?

Let me start with me:

I LOOOOOVE to read, I read every night and every lunch hour at work. I read about 4-5 books a week. My favorite genres are Paranormal, Historical Romance (Scottish and Viking mostly), Contemporary romance and comedies.

Right now I am reading the latest book of G.A. Aiken “The Dragon Who Loved me” Before that, I just finished the latest Viking II series of Sandra Hill “Dark Viking” and before that, Shelly Laurenston’s “Bear Meets Girl” and J.R. Ward’s “Lover Reborn”

Shhhh…Depending if anyone else fesses up, I’ll tell you some of the friskier books I have read too. :behindsofa:

I have a “To be Read” pile of about 25 books.

Oh, I love my kindle, but adore my paperbacks.

I've been in a supernatural/vampire/werewolf/etc. mood with my books for the last couple of years and plowing through quite a few series. I think they call them "urban fantasy". I'm currently (just started) reading the "Elemental Assassin" series by Jennifer Estep. My favourite series so far are Kim Harrison's "Hollow" series and Jim Butcher's "Dresden Files" series. I really like series for some reason.

I have heard of Butcher, but haven't gotten to read any of her books. I will add her to my list.

Have you read any of these:

Larissa Ione's Demonica Series (vamps, demons, werewolves) - Sexy, very good and super funny
JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood (Vamps) One of my first paranormal series.
Alexandra Ivy's Guardian's of Eternity (Vamps, weres, witches, gargoyles). Very sexy, very interesting and funny.
Shelly Laurenston's Pride series. OMG, she is SUUUUPER FUNNY. These books are about weres some even mixed breeds like a half polar bear half Lion. Her books are awesome, she also writes as G.A. Aiken and has a series called Dragon Kin which is just as funny.
Kresley Cole's Immortal After Dark Series is one of the best Paranormal series ever!

I can go on and on...

How is Elemental Assassin so far? what is it about?

I like a lot of different things... Fantasy, (though not the vampire/werewolf stuff) Sci-Fi, historical novels, historical biographies, anything horse or dog related and some mystery. Right now, I've been enjoying John Katz' books on his life at Bedlam farm, his farm in up-state NY.

I like either good LONG books, or authors who are fairly prolific. If I read a good shorter book and there's nothing to follow it, I feel a bit... empty.:)

ETA: I listen to audio books CONSTANTLY while I'm driving, and while I still buy paper books when there is no electronic alternative, I LOVE being able to store my library on my iPad!

I first got the kindle for some of the series I read that were only coming out on Eformat. I have added more and more books to the kidle as the time goes by and I LOVE being able to sync my phone (droid) with my Kindle and read anywhere without anyone knowing about it! :peace:

I've read The Black Dagger Brotherhood and the Immortal After Dark series. I'll have to look to see if I have the other ones on my ereader...if not...now I have some ideas for new ones to get!

The Elemental Assassin series is about an Assassin (female) who can use both stone elemental magic and ice elemental magic. There are elementals and vampires (dwarves and giants too) in it so far. It's pretty good...so far it's basically been about solving a setup that involved her handler being brutally murdered.

Did you hear that the next book in the BDB will be Qhuinn & Blay's? What did you think of Thor's Book?

I am adding it to my e-TBD list for sure!

Have you check Karen Marie Monning's Fever series? I have heard only good things about it, although I haven't read it yet (only her Highlander Series which I love). Also Jeanine Frost's Night Huntress Series, they are both about Female Assasins/Main Characters.

Yay, fun thread!! I too am an avid reader, have been since I was very young, my poor mom couldn't keep up with my book reading 'habit'! LOL it's wonderful to see how I have passed my love of reading down to my son!!

I prefer the easy-reads, fluffy kind of romance/family drama kind of books. I am actually reading a book about Therapy Dog training right now, but typically I read books by Nicholas Sparks, Luann Rice, Kristen Hannah etc... LOL I know, I know, cheesy, but enjoyable! :)

I just finished the Shades of Grey series and I think I'll re-read them about 20 times. No, just kidding. I am now reading the Big Bad Wolf series. It's okay, but not great.

If you like the paranormal romance stuff, check out HP Mallory. She's great. I also really like Amanda Hocking.

I loved 50 shades! If you like to read something similar (not of the same caliber, but good enough), there is a new book out by Sylvia Day called "Bared to You" will be followed by "Deeper in You" (In Oct 2012).

I enjoyed Bared very much, very tortured hero, very dysfunctional couple that despite all, love each other enough to try and make it work!

Wow. Lots of paranormal readers out there. I have read most of what you have mentioned.

Here are some others. My favs:
Katie MacAlister - OMG funny, She has contemporary stuff, vampire, and dragon series.
Victoria Laurie - chic lit paranormal, Abby Cooper-Psychic Eye series, Ghost Hunter series
Patricia Briggs - incredible terrific werewolf/skinwalker/fae Mercy Thompson series
KM Moning - Fever series is quite good. I enjoyed it.

J.D. Robb - homicide detective in future NYC
Kay Hooper - Bishop series - FBI division of paranormals
Suzanne Brockmann - troubleshooters - Seals/FBI/etc

Dick Francis - mysteries in the English horse racing world. His early stuff is incredible.
Robert B. Parker - Spenser for Hire is so much better in the books.

I could go on. I read a lot. I didn't even touch SciFi.
John Ringo, David Weber, Jack Campbell, Elizabeth Moon, Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child, ....

I started her "Dark Ones" series a while back and went as far as the 4th book. After that, I found too many similarities between the main characters on each book and gave them up. They were super funny, but I just lost interest.
I do have all her Dragon books (both series) and plan to read them sometime.

Karen Marie Monning also has a Highlander Series (Time travel/fairies). I absolutely loved this series.

If you enjoyed Katie MacAlister, check out Gena Showalter's Lords of the Underworld series. She is very funny and this series is Awesome!!!

I read it... It was OK, but a little maudlin for my tastes. I think I mentioned Jon Katz's books about his dogs on Bedlam Farm... he's written a BUNCH of them, and I've liked every one. There's a good story, with some useful tips on training and just LIVING with dogs embedded.

I often have a few books I am reading, I still like to hold the book not the electronic stuff, partly because the screen is hard for me to see (I hate my Droid, I can't see it in the sun and that's when it rings). I am reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, By Barbara kingsolver.

Huh! So many books and authors I haven't heard of! Yes, I lived in US for some time and I remember that it is completely different than here in Europe! Right now I read Franzen's Freedom and after 200 pages I still do not like it. I'll go on reading! Since I graduated literature at the universty, I never read half of the book and then quit it.
This morning I saw new book about dogs in bookshop - I cannot remember the title and author but it seems very interesting. The main theme is how world looks from dog's prespective and what we should do to understand them better and help them to cope with this big human world. I will buy that one for sure!
Since I am foreign affairs columnist in a big newspaper, I have to read a lot of political stuff. Sometimes it is interesting, and sometimes it is soooooo boring! :frusty: Lately books about Karl Marx and his predictions about the end of capitalism are very popular all over Europe. Some of those are a bit stupid, but some are quite interesting! Right now I am preparing for election in US!

I too am an avid reader, just trying to think of American authors that I particularly enjoy,oh yes I have read all of Harlam Coben's books his stand alones, and the Miron Bolitar series.I also enjoyed of Bill Brysons books.I thought Stieg Larsson's thrillers, gave an interesting insight to scandinavian living. And I must admit I am a great Harry Potter fan! There are just so many wonderful books out there.I love an author called C J Sanson who writes thrillers set in Tudor England, they are historically correct, and extremely descriptive without being too wordy.

I thought I would revive this thread :) I just finished reading the best book! Following Atticus by Tom Ryan, about a man and his awesome dog. If you like dog books I recommend this one. Before that I read all three of Gillian Flynn's books, kind of dark but good reads. I'm off to find a new dog book...they just make me happy!

In the fifth or sixth grade, my english teacher said that I was reading way below my capacity. I was reading all the dog books at that time --Lassie, etc. So I checked out the Foxes of Harrow by Frank Yerby. Read all his stuff then went to Hemmingway and lots of other stuff. I used to read every day, but since my vision loss, I can only read on my Nook. I have the text blown up so I have to constantly turn pages--just to turn one normal page. I have the original nook which is the easiest to turn pages. Sherron got me the one with the lighted background, so I could read at night without turning on the light, but it is touch screen and real touchy. I am always having to reset back to the page I was on. I May try a tablet with lighted screen--more words on the screen, but one person said that she couldn't store a lot of books on hers like the Nook. Anyway here are my latest downloads:
The Forgotten by David Baldacci; The Black Box by Michael Connelly; The Racketer by John Grishaml
etc. Other favorit authors are Patricia cornwell; Jeffery Deaver; John Sandford (my favorite) Kathy riechs, Kay hooper and the best of all Lee Child' s Jack Reacher series which should be read in order of publication. Oh another best favorite is Daniel Silva's Gabriel Allon Series also should be read in order because he ages. I only read the James Patterson books that Patterson himself writes.

I love seeing all the paranormal/fantasy/sci fi book addicts here! If you like Karen Marie Moning, try her Fever series. Also try Thomas Sniegoski's Remy Chandler series if you like fallen angels.
Ilona Andrews had a couple of great series too.
Check out FictFact to track different series and when the new ones come out http://www.fictfact.com/BookReleaseCalendar.aspx

Here's some of my favs:
Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series
Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series
Lara Adrian's Breed series
Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series
Rachel Vincent's Shifter series (awesome series!)
Faith Hunter: Jane Yellowrock

Oh, and for historical romance, you can't go wrong with Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series!

I also like a lot of young adult series because sometimes I just don't want to read page after page of sex lol
Julie Kagawa - Iron Fey
Cassandra Clare - Mortal Instruments
Richelle Mead

I get a lot of good book recommendations from Goodreads and Library Thing. Look me up :)

The first one I got was the original Nook. I love it the most. With the text at normal size, the page is about like a paper back and it is easy to work. The backlighted one is good if you read a lot in the middle of the night and do't want to turn the light on so as not to wake the DH. The best thing of any is that the books are from a third to half price of a hardbound one. And if you go back to older books, lke I n I wanted to read a whole series before reading the latest one, then the books are sometime oly $2. And, they can be shared lent. You can have up to 5 devices on one account. s my two daughters and me are on one account. Whatever one buys the others can download. A real bargain if you have family r friends that like the same types of books.

Anything historical, fact or fiction . . .but LOVE political books (yes, I'm a hack). Can't resist a good cook book . . .but I rarely read anything anymore that's on paper. Except for one birding magazine for which there's not an electronic version of, if I can't download it from iBooks, Barns & Noble or Amazon, I'm not likely to buy it. I DO still by the hard back copies of every Newberry winner for my grand kids (been collecting them since my children were little) . . .but otherwise, I'm all about the iPad :D
