Wow- that is scary. You are lucky you had 18 years after them. Mine went after 9 years, and Buzzy is so sensitive to it, and gets so upset it gives him diarrhea if he hears one!

Are they all on the same circuit, and nothing else on that circuit? When I built new houses, that's the way I set them up. I never trusted the ones that were battery only. If that's the case, just make sure to mark the breaker, and if there's obviously no smoke, the breaker can just be flipped off.

I was happy to hear it wasn't Gwen or Molly and I'm so sorry for your scare. I moved into an apartment a long time ago and the battery started beeping in the middle of the night. I climbed up a chair and tried to figure out how to make it stop. then I noticed a wire. I tried to just put a pillow over my head but after going crazy I climbed back up and cut the wire. I hadn't really read my lease about not tampering with the fire detector.

Gee Dave, I had those two stiff drinks for you and woke up this morning with a hangover--the first one in many years. What I will do for a Havanese friend.
BTW DH and I came home one night many years ago to find two police cars in the yard, lights flashing, police with guns going through the house. My then teenaged youngest child and his friend had scared themselves and thought someone was trying to break in. They had run to the neighbors house and of course the neighbors called the police. Well you can imagine how scared we were at first. That may have been my last hangover.
