you must smell good lol. No Linda, it's as simple as you think. He is reassured by your smell, it's rewarding for him and calms him. That's why clothing especially socks can be a good thing to leave for a dog with SA. Years ago if one of the hunting dogs was lost, the owner would leave a jacket or sweater by the road. The next day we'd go out and find the dog laying on it waiting for the owner. Seen that happen at least three or four times with different dogs.
