ProHeart 6

My vet told me today about a "new" heartworm preventative called ProHeart 6. It's an injection given by the vet and lasts for 6 months. I say "new" because he told me that it has been used in Australia for years, but is just being tested in the US. My vet clinic is one of the clinics participating in the testing. Did anyone ever hear of this or use it?

That seems like a long time for an anti-parasitic to be in your dog's system (I'm of course not medically qualified to make a statement like that-just my opinion). I never heard of it, but I do know that heartworm isn't residual and it kills what may be there at the time. I wonder how this would work and how safe it would be.

I would say stick with heartguard or interceptor. tried and true. Let some one else's pup be the guinee pig. Especially if Santos has a reaction then it is a 6 month dose. and also he is a pup and growing so what he needs now may not protect him in 3 months because he is bigger. We use interceptor.

It is NOT new. It KILLS dogs. Seriously. Yes, I could have worded that nicer, but I am angry that your vet is pushing it and saying it is new. Just do some googling and you will find a number of dog deaths from this product. Many of these deaths are in larger dogs -- what in the world would this do to a small dog like a hav? Many of the deaths occurred on the second or third shot, but some after just one shot.
