Vaccine adverse reactions

Hi All,

Has anybody ever heard of a DA2PPV-CPV vaccine causing hind end weakness in dogs? 8-10 days prior to my Parker having these issues with his hind end he had a routine distemper vaccine and a bordatella vaccine. I originally dismissed this as being the cause because he had stopped jumping on my bed a couple months before so it seemed like this was all tied together. However, I am now wondering if my original thoughts of the stopping of the bed jumping was due to weight gain and completely unrelated to the hind end thing that they think could be a disc problem. He never stopped jumping up on the couch or chair at the time he stopped the bed jumping. I am now thinking if this was a true disc problem he wouldn't have been jumping at all.

Things just don't make sense with the disc diagnosis. He can be having a lot of trouble one moment then if someone rings the bell he moves around with no trouble for a while.

I had a Yorkie mix that had a horrible reaction to the lepto vaccine where he could hardly walk at all for 24 hrs. He was in more pain with that than he was with his luxating patella surgery. He completely recovered though. It wasn't ongoing like Parker's has been.

We do have an appointment at a specialized facility where he can have the needed tests to find out if it is the spine but the vaccine thing has been gnawing at me. I've seen lots of info about the rabies vaccine causing hind end paralysis but so far not the distemper. If anyone knows anything I'd be interested to hear. Thanks, Teresa

Well... Havanese are a known vaccine sensitive breed, and I would never give multiple vaccines at the same time. Actually, I would never give Bordatella vaccine period, and I don't give Distemper/Parvo routinely... I titer instead. However, you have other things going on with Parker. (Notably his weight issues). I wouldn't jump to a conclusion that this was a vaccine reaction without really ruling out other causes. (Especially ones that can be treated). I WOULD, however, put some thought into a minimal vaccine protocol for him going forward, just because he is a vaccine sensitive breed. Many of us here follow Dr. Jean Dodd's protocol for vaccine sensitive dogs.
