My vet is NOT recommending the vaccine. She says that it is not a good enough protection against the disease, and there is not enough known about possible side effects. She siad that, yes, it is likely that dogs will get sick if they are exposed, and that the biggest concern is secondary bacterail pneumonia. MOST dogs will only be mildly ill, and will recover on their own. She said people should be quick to contact their vet at any sign of coughing or respiratory distress.

She thought that my decision to avoid the big indoor dog shows this summer was prudent. But I do know a lot of people who are still planning to attend, at least based on the news in this area so far.

Karen, I don't plan on vaccinating Oreo either, but I will not start taking him to daycare (which I had planned to do soon) or the dog park during this outbreak in our area. From the newspaper article I posted that referenced it spreading at dog shows, it sounds like you are making a wise decision to sit this one out. Hope all our fur babies stay healthy!
