farmers' markets

After reading about Tux, Kodi, Pixel, and Panda getting to go to farmers' markets in FL and MA, I sent an email to our local FM authorities to ask why Shama can't join in the fun. Here's the answer I received:

It's MN department of health law. Pets can be at markets but not within 15 feet of a vendor selling food. Since our isles are only 20 feet across it is not possible.
Food markets are treated the same as grocery stores and other retail businesses. Only trained service dogs are allowed as they are trained not to jump on people, sample the food, or pee on someone's table leg - which happened to one of our vendors last year. Most people with dogs walk right past our signs!

She went on to say that she personally is a dog lover . . .

Thought you might be interested. I wonder what other states allow or don't allow dogs at FM?

Interesting. I have taken Perry to our farmers market here (though don't do it often because he gets car sick so it feels more like torturing him than socializing him). I've also taken him into stores like WalMart in the US - but only being carried in his bag (not his sherpa, but the shoulder bag I got for him for crowded places). I tried that here and probably could have gotten away with it if there weren't security guards at the entrance checking bags .

We were in Addis last weekend (without Perry) and saw a person with an adorable german shepherd puppy in a supermarket walking around on a leash (which I would never do as a puppy is most probably not yet potty trained for non-house places yet! Heck, I probably wouldn't do it for Perry either - I am 99% sure he wouldn't make a mess, but I'd still rather carry him in those sort of places just to be safe)

Not sure how the laws differ, but around here, there is a LOT more space than that in the walk ways between stalls. But I donít think thatís the deciding factor, as I see dogs (with their owners) purchasing things, so right up against booths. I donít think Iíve ever seen a misbehaving dog. I HAVE seen humans idiotically using flexis as unintended ďtrip wiresĒ...

Funny that this subject came up because there was an article in todayís SF paper re prohibitions on dogs in California at farmerís markets!! https://www.sfchronicle.com/food/art...e-12812592.php

Also mentions how often signs are ignored!!
