Bald Spot

Since Whisky has been a pup she has had a spot on her back that was a little bit warmer than the rest of her skin and the hair was very coarse. She has always scratched at that area and bit it some, but the vet said the skin looked fine and I shouldn't worry. The skin is warm, but not red or inflamed in any way, but the a hair has fallen out. This just happened over the last couple of days. I think that Whisky is going through the blowing coat phase, but I am concerned that it is something more. I have just started her on fish oil, as her skin is very dry. Should I just take her to the vet and have them run tests? I don't want her poked and prodded, but I don't want her to suffer either. I have considered changing her diet away from chicken products, but not sure what to give her. She is 10 months now, so we are close to switching her to adult food. Has anyone else had a dog that lost some hair? I will post a picture tonight.

I guess if it isn't oozing, crusty or red and is the same as it always was, I wouldn't worry. But if she really starts going after it, I would haul her in to make sure it wasn't a hot spot.

What exactly is a hot spot? I am clueless, the area where the hair is missing is warm to the touch, but not red and crusty or anything like that

It is a spot where the dog has licked and chewed until it gets infected. That section of skin puts off a lot of heat, usually hairless and yellowish at first. If they keep licking, it starts to ooze and turns nasty-looking. My previous dog got bored while he was at the boarder's and decided licking his leg was a marvelous idea.

Constant licking and heat are the first signs. Here is a link but don't wig out over the gross pictures. Kit's never looked that bad. http://vetmedicine.about.com/cs/dogd...a/hotspots.htm
