The Cone: when can we remove?

Hey. Lucky's been neutered now and has a little scar that of course he is convinced must be licked. The cone the vet sent him home with was just a little too short and scraped the scar (open once) when Lucky tried to lick. We tried the soft collars and maybe we didn't blow them up enough, but Luck was able to roll right over them to find his scar. We now have a deeper clear plastic cone that does the trick but is hard for Lucky to navigate (and he is a really good sport about it). It's not easy to take on and off so it's pretty much always on which the vet said we should do for 6 days. But how do we know when to remove it? Maybe the scar will heal faster (it's scabbing now), but what does healed look like? Can't wait to take this thing off. Your advise and experience would be most helpful.

Try an onsie. Grab a couple cheap ones from Walmart and put it on backwards. You will have to cut a hole for his tail. Measure how long he is first and bring the tape measure to the store. I think Jack wore a 6 months size.

Jack had to wear a onsie and the cone of shame. I have never seen a dog with a tongue so long.

Pam

You don't even need to cut a hole if you put it on backwards. Just don't snap the middle snap!

true. true...

Then we will need embarrassing pictures of him. Here is one of Jack so you know that Lucky isn't alone in his misery.

I'm dealing with the cone issue now. If he is wanting to lick that area, he must wear the cone. When the scar is healing it itches causing them to want to lick. This could cause the dog to get hot spots and become obsessed with licking. Fred's surgeon told me dogs become obsessed with licking easily. I take his cone off when I'm home and correct him If I see him going at it. He listens well and stops immediately. When I leave the house I put the cone on. I'll take the cone off for good once I see he's not obsessed with the area.

I just cut the foot end off a sock and slipped it on her and it has worked very well. She starting to lick it after a week, but hasn't really been able to get under it much. After I took the picture I had removed everything under the sock. Luckily, she doesn't seem to mind the sock at all. Still has about five days until stitches are removed.
