Aries is in her 1st Heat..

Hi all! My 9 month old girl is just starting her 1st heat, I noticed the first few "spots" around the house Friday. I've never had a non-spayed female before, so I'm not exactly sure what all to expect, but I've been reading up on it.

My male, Sonic, is neutered. We have a crate and expen set up for when we leave the two home alone for any length of time. Should I continue to leave them penned together while she's in heat since he is fixed or should I separate them anyway?

I would watch them to see how they do together if he isn't bothering her it would be fine to keep them together. Sometimes they like to hump each other. I noticed the first heat they weren't as sexual towards each other. Mine just had their third heat and I had to separate them for the first time.

I have 2 Havs,Dizzie my boy who is neutered, and Nellie the girl who is not.Nellie is 2 and a half, and has had 3 heat cycles. The first was the worst,it went on for just over 3 weeks, the first week there was a little blood and she wore knickers with pads for about 4 days. The second week she squeaked and squealed at Dizzie, and pushed her butt in his face, eventually he got the idea of what he was supposed to do,but obviously as he has been done it didn't really work! Her 2nd cycle 8 months later, didn't last as long, and she kept herself very clean,Dizzie was exhausted by her antics. We have always been able to go out for walks,I just keep her on her extending lead, but because she is so small I can pick her up if I see a dog approaching. Her 3rd cycle took me by surprise, there was no build up behaviour and she was totally clean, the worst thing is the dreadful yapping sound she makes to try and entice Dizzie, but other than that there is no problem, they have never been kept apart.Dizzie's fur does get a little matted on his chest due to the constant humping!

It really depends on the behavior of your dogs, we had neighbors who were trying to breed their pit bull female, she kept rejecting the male and would attack him, they would let them run along the fence line and they tried spraying something. All my dogs currently are spayed or neutered, however Boo Boo who was a stud dog at one time he went nuts whineing all night and he rubbed all the hair off a spot on his head when I had to crate him, the second problem was all the other dogs took their cue from was a nightmare. If they are humping all the time seperate them it is just too tiring for the dogs.

I'm so glad my girls have been spayed.

I'd watch and see if she has negative behavior toward him. Alot of the girls are testy when not ready to be bred and can be ugly to males that bother them. he might ignore her, which would be good. As long as they get along, keep them together, they will be happier. Be sure to keep her away from other dogs for a month. They sometimes send off smells even after ovulation is long over.
