What's In Pet Food?

mind boggling if you ask me. Wonder why human food is better, here's why .http://www.bornfreeusa.org/facts.php?p=359&more=1

I thought this statement interesting. ..."The most reputable manufacturers of “superpremium” and “natural” foods agree with holistic veterinarians and other experts that the very best diet for your animal companion is one that you make yourself. A homemade diet, carefully balanced nutritionally and using organic foods, is closest to what Mother Nature intended. "

and for those of us that can't cook, here is an heirarchy of food types from best to worst

Fresh food, raw
Fresh food, cooked
Frozen fresh prepared or raw, freeze dried, dehydrated
Canned food
Dry food

Wow! That was eye opening. I guess I need to make some changes in what I am feeding. (and I thought I was buying good stuff). Thanks for sharing!

I agree, but I don't think all dry foods are created equally. Or canned for that matter.
Fresh has to be better, but I don't know how to do that so that all the nutrients are there, and it would be time consuming

Ya you cant just throw together a dinner and expect it to be healthy for the dog. If I was to start home cooking I would get a dietitian to help figure it out. Vitamin supplements scare me I just threw away $40 dollars worth. I may start home cooking but I'm limited because Zoey doesn't handle beef very well or to much protein.

The whole food thing is such a mystery to me. Miss Yorkie was put on canned Iams by the vet...but not turkey flavor since it doesn't agree with her stomach.

Bama was on prescription food for awhile, AD (I think it's the puppy and kitten critical care formula). She is due for shots tomorrow, and I plan to ask what she should eat these days. Being on prescription food can become problematic when traveling. I bought a case to take with us over the holidays, and it's a good thing I did because we stayed longer than planned.
