HELP---from worms to ....

anal glands.... sorry folks. But I could really use some help. So after Jaspers worms/drops of blood on friday everything seemed fine. But today we had some friends visit and one of them scared Jasper who has been a little bit off lately anyway.

So I noticed I horrible smell and a little trickle on his tail fur-- and then I looked for source of the horrible smell and couldn't find any physical evidence but the smell (other than on Jasper) was right where Jasper scuttled away.

SO did Jasper express his glands in fear? Could something have hurt him when the groomer expressed his glands? What should I look for? Should I take him to the vet tomorrow? His stools have been normal and his butt looks fine.

I have smelled this smell on him once before when he had a particular stressful time with a new dog at doggy daycare-- I wasn't sure what it was then-- but this time I 99% sure it is his anal glands...

Yeah, thats normal that they express their anal glands when they are extremely scared of something. If his anal glands are nice and clean he will just emit a stinky smell which will stay on him till you bath him probably. If his glands would have been dirty, he probably would have s%&%$it himself. ughhhh..
But totally normal!

Eeks!

I don't know if I've dealt with this? lol....I do know one night in particular she was stinking up the whole bed, farting..or so I thought. I can't say the smell stayed there for more than 10 minutes, so it must've been the run of the mill flatuance? lol....I'm dreading the anal gland thing. She's never had them 'expelled' or whatever that is, I should probably go get that done as a preventive thing, ehh?

So they do this when they get scared? hmm..

I'm surprised this didnt' happen last night when my neighbor was throwing snowballs at my house and it was making Gucci bark and freak out, of course..I was home alone and got scared and turned the alarm on early, lol..and today I was told what it was!! *sigh* But I think *I* was the scared one

Missy, I'm no anal sac expert, but if he just had them expressed, shouldn't they be clean and odor-free?

Kara, this is one of those areas that most dog people & vets agree - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Not all dogs need them expressed. They should be taking care of themselves on their own. If you see Gucci start to scooch her rear on the floor or the ground, then you might want to consider having them checked. My experience has been that puppies need assistance more often than adults, but if you have an adult that didn't need help as a puppy, they probably won't need it.

Missy, If it were me I would call my vet for peace of mind and to be sure! After having dogs my entire life, it's just been in the past few years I even knew there was such a thing as an anal gland! I've never smelled or seen anything out of the ordinary from or on Valentino. Thank goodness.....it doesn't sound like much fun!

This breed just keeps getting better!!!!!! Butt washings, no shedding (YEA), very little grooming (RIGHT). Now this is another thing I have NEVER had before. Once Smarty had a watery discharge that really smelled. I thought she must have a little diarrhea, but it was fairly clear. Nothing else, so I just dismissed it, I guess it was anal glands? How often can we look forward to this? One thing she does not do (YET) is let off gas, we have commented on the fact that we never smell her. MY DD's SPCA terrier was another story, she would run you out of the room.
