Vaccinations

Bailey had her first visit with my vet. He has been my vet since 1993 so I do trust him. He did an excellent job of checking her out and giving her the required puppy shots. I engaged in a conversation over serums and how it has been found out that some serums, rabies in particular can cause reactions in Havanese. He told me that he used to use Fort Dodge serums, but no longer does. He said the percentages of reactions in all animals using this name brand serum was pretty high. He told me that he had given his daughter's cat a rabies shot (using Fort Dodge) and it died from a reaction. He uses another serum now that has a much lower percentage of reactions.

So, ask your vet what type of serums he uses, especially for rabies. If they use Fort Dodge serums, I would ask for another name brand.

Thanks, Susie..that is definately a good idea to mention. I know Gucci is due for her 1yo shots this month and I'm not sure what all that entails, but I'll ask about the rabies serum. I noticed she was really tired and seemed to feel crummy for a few days after it the last time.

i just started titer testing my dog. my breeder is very anti vaccinations, and recommended that i start doing this with my dog. her dogs other than rabies have been vaccination free for 7 years. i only give my dog rabbies. i had a long talk with my vet and told him that he had a reaction to lepto and parvo, he was out of it for days and had a fever. anyways, titering helps determine if they are a carrier to the above. if they are not, there's no need to vacinate them. she also mentioned to me that most vets although knowledgeable, don't know a whole lot about havanese. i had taken several articles about vaccinations and how they affect the hav,he read it and decided to take a different approach with my dog than others. anyways, so far, he's great, no reactions, he's due for his rabies this summer. keep in mind, todays vaccinations are all lumped in one so it's a triple whammy to our pups and they give the same dose to our little guys as they would to a st. bernard.

Tori was given all of her vaccinations separately at my request, and her vet's agreement. We also waited 3 weeks between her last puppy shot and her rabies. Yes, it did take a lot longer for her to get them all and she did get "stuck" more times but, if she'd had any reaction, we'd have known exactly which vaccine the reaction was to.

We'll do titers before she ever gets any more (except rabies, of course, since the law requires it)

I've been doing lots of reading on vaccinations and thir effects. I've now decided to do Titir testing as well and only do rabies as they are required by law.

I just switched vets, so we will be talking about titer testing. This new vet worked at the old vet and just opened up his own practice much closer to my house. I can walk there. The other vet was a 1/2 drive each way.

My vet is not delighted ! But I have to pay him, so he has to do what I want for my dogs, otherwise I would change.
His opinion is giving the full vaccination program.
My dogs have the rabies vaccination for 3 years now.
