You can start with a teaspoon to make sure it doesn't really upset his intestinal tract. For a whole meal, don't start with more than a tablespoon at the most. You might end up with a surprise of really loose stools.
And yes, pumpkin is great for getting things moving when they are constipated. I haven't had any luck with using it to firm up loose stools though. I just ended up with bright orange diarrhea that stained the floor. Not fun.
