Tummy problems

About 4 days after Lucy was spayed she started having stomach issues. She threw up three times in AM on Monday, had diarreah Tuesday, threw up again Wednesday, and she's been having loose stool and diarreah since Thursday. Called vet Friday and she recommended to put her on the boiled chicken and rice diet for a few days. So I did that yesterday but...my mistake, I gave her brown rice and not white. I didn't realize brown rice would have the opposite effect (whoops). Well Lucy woke up 3 times last night to go to the bathroom. What a mess.

Since I don't have white rice at the moment I decided to serve her the boiled chicken and a spoonful of pure pumpkin.

My question for you all is how much chicken/pumpkin/white rice should she be eating at meals? I don't want to overdo it. She weighs 5.5 lbs

Not sure on amounts, because Kodi wasn't that small when we brought him home! I'd say check with the vet on that. I know smaller meals more often is easier on an upset tummy.

I did want to comment on the rice, though. They now make pre-cooked, shelf-stable packages of white rice. I always keep a couple of small packages around, along with a can of pumpkin "in case of emergencies". It's not that we've needed it that often, but I don't always have the time and/or inclination to start cooking if loose poop happens. Also (and it sounds like you do the same!) we NEVER eat white rice ourselves, so the "people rice" in the house is all brown rice. So it's very convenient to have these little packages around, just in case!

canned pumpkin can be given regularly but add gradually working up to one tablespoon per day ... Dodds Too much can reverse things.

Thank you! I will have to make a run to the store and get those pre-cooked white rice packages. I may have given her too much of the pumpkin (probably about a tablespoon) because shortly after she went to the bathroom, and it was orange mush (sorry TMI).
