Springtime allergies!

I guess spring is officially here in Minnesota. Little over a week ago Maddy's eyes swelled up and the itching began. I figured this could'nt be a food allergy because I didn't change a thing and she has been on her diet for 4 1/2 months now.

Instead of heading out to her regular vet, I took her to an allergy, dermo specialist. I had done some research before the office visit and it turns out he told me nothing more than what I had learned from my own research.

She got an ointment for her eyes and a steroid. He also told me I could give her up to 3 childrens benedryl a day. She weighs 13 1/2 lbs. (She was 12 in Feb. when she was spayed.) That sounded like an awful lot to me. I give her one in the morning and one at bedtime.

I have to say, she had huge improvements in just one day. Her eyes went back to normal and she has stopped itching. I feel so bad though because she has lost alot of hair on her muzzle. The hair from the bridge of her nose covers the area though so it is not that noticable.

Just wondering if anyone has done allergy testing and gone through with the allergy shots?

I haven't done that yet, but I am definetly interested in seeing an allergy/dermo specialist like you did. Is it expensive? Carmen has terrible hay fever and Tito has food allergies. What does the steroid do?
