Pads dry/hard and peeling

I was cuddling on the couch and thought I saw some dirt stuck on my Havs paw. I pulled it off, and he grunted a little and I realized his large pad on both front paws is peeling and flaking and is very dry and hard in some areas and that is actually what I pulled off of his paw. I also found more flakes in his coat. on his leg.

Is this "normal" or is this bad? What can I do to keep them moisturized?

Thanks!!!

Hmmm does't sound too normal to me. I've never seen that on Bogart or Brando. Is it possible he's having an allergic reaction to his food and is chewing his paws? That would be my first concern. I'd definitely take him to the vet if his paws are shredded.

I haven't experienced this. In alignment with Daniel, I think you should at least call your vet and inquire about it.

I haven't heard of this in Havanese but have heard of it. I know that it needs a special ointment so talk to your vet. In the back of my mind I'm thinking Vaseline but being petroleum based I'd be concerned about licking it off.

Has your Hav been on any hot surfaces lately? My lab who has incredibly tough pads began "dancing" on the wooden deck a couple of days ago and I realized it was so hot that it was actually burning his feet. Just a thought . . .

When we took my DH's english bull dog for a walk on a warmer day the bottom of his pads got burnt by the cement. It wasnt that hot but because he had not been on a walk for a long time (we were just visiting) he couldnt handle it. He had a cut/peel on his pad, it was really sad.

You should go see your vet to be safe. hope he feels better!

I have lotion for my Huskies that was made just for the pads of there feet when they get dry and cracked. If you want the name I'll look it up when I get home.
