Tell Me How They Play

Our Bella is almost a year old and is about 7lbs. DaniGirl is 7 1/2 years old, a sturdy 9 lbs., and has had 4 litters. When they start playing, we get scared that they will hurt themselves. They run and chase each other, wrestle, and DaniGirl will run after Bella--actually, she bounces at her! It's really cute but we don't know if Dani will hurt Bella since Bella is light and Dani is sturdy.

Can they hurt themselves running around the house and wrestling? When should we step in? Dani has been in our house 3 weeks now and it looks like she's become a part of our family!

Nancy that is great to hear. Mine are the same way. Belle has really became BFF's with Dasher. I think Dora doesnt like wrestling with Belle (belle is pretty cut throat!) and just let's Dasher get the beating. Great thing is Dasher loves Belle to chase him and then will turn and chase her. But the sounds they make etc. I only step in when I am asking them to do something or I think one (always belle) is starting to get out of control or being too rough.

Nancy,

When my boys "play" and chase each other I'm sure an uninitiated onlooker would think they're killing each other. It's just the way they play. I too stop it if I think it's getting out of hand but most of the time I wait for them to wear themselves out. When Bailey first came home I was really worried when the RLH's ended with Milo pouncing on the little (by comparison) Bailey. After a few heart stopping moments (for me), I relaxed and let them do their thing. Thankfully nobody's gotten hurt yet.

Just Milo and me, and . . . Bailey makes three . . . until Ruby said, "hey, what about me?"

I also assume that since Dani has had 4 litters, she's not going to go overboard in play. My husband is concerned that Bella is being a bully. She only plays like that when it is play time and other times she's sleeping next to Dani or off by herself. But there is that 6 1/2 year age difference--Oh, I can relate to Dani!

Nancy a good rule of thumb to follow is this: If both dogs are actively playing, then it's okay. In other words, if both dogs are always going back for more, then it's fine. If one dog is bullying the other, the other dog will always be trying to run away and will NOT go back to the first dog for play. In that case, you should step in.

Also, they will let each other know when play is too rough. Kubrick stepped on little Guapo a couple of times during play (Guapo being a mighty but tiny 4lbs at the time) and Guapo would whine to let Kubrick know that was too rough. We knew he was fine, though, because he would turn around and ask for more, LOL. They will work things out in the end.

Vinny is 20 lbs and Lulu is 7. I have never had to step in yet. The way they growl you would think it is world war III but they both do their share of give and take. I've actually never seen them fight, it is always play. If I ever saw any sign of bullying I would step in immediately but they both give as good as they get, lol.

Mine both rough house like crazy and unfortunately i have seen clumps of hair go flying. I have to break them up when it gets like that, but they love playing with eachother. Just keep a look out on them and if you see one running away, whining, other stuff that makes you uncomfortable just distract them with other toys and turn it into a different game like chase or tossing a ball.

Your input has been SO helpful. We have a better idea of what's normal, what to expect, and we know our Bella isn't on her way to a Juvinille Detention Center!
