Ruby gets car sick

Attachment 13625Saturday was a big day for Ruby. First it was a trip to the dog park in Boca Raton for the Canine Cove opening. Then it was off to Orlando for DH to take pictures of a building. Then off to Tampa where Ruby was evaluated to see how she was doing as a show potential (she's really nice). During the car trip Ruby drooled a lot but slept most of the way.

However, the next day on our way back to Miami she was very sick. She had diaharrea in the morning. She vomited twice in the car, and just suffered quietly. We stopped and cleaned her up immediately. My heart goes out to her. We're going to have to get her accustomed to driving in the car because we take all the dogs with us on our frequent weekend getaways and to dog shows. I'm hoping she will grow out of this and feel we must continue to take her out in the car so she gets used to the motion. When we get in the car she's eager to go but once we get going she shivers and drools.

Does anyone in the Forum have experience with overcoming car sickness? I need some good suggestions please.

How old is she, Paula?

Tori had horrible car sickness up until she was about 9 mos. old then she seemed to outgrow it. I had tried many things during the worst of it (elevated car seat, Rescue Remedy, Quiet Time, etc). The things that helped her the most were to: 1) keep taking her for drives, 2) have her ride on the floor of the backseat, 3) give her Dramamine, Bonine or Benedryl (vet recommendation) for longer trips. The down side to the meds were they made her sluggish/sleepy (Bonine caused this the least, the non-drowsy Dramamine didn't work as well for the ). The sleepiness was fine while we were driving but, when we reached our destination she usually just moped/laid around and didn't interact at all .

Car sickness is not fun stuff! I sure hope Ruby manages to get over it soon.

Ruby is 6 months one week old. I thank you Leslie for your advice. I'm calling the vet today. I think I'll try sitting her on the floor when we go to pick up DS from his job this afternoon. I hope it works. I'm hopeful that she too will outgrow this, she just looks so pitiful when she's stressed and sick.
