Caution! Hand Sanitizer Gel

Hi, Everyone:
I read on another board that several breeders had lost puppies due to toxic reactions from hand sanitizer gel. The owners had cleaned their own hands with the gel and then picked up the puppies. (no indication of age of puppies). It was also mentioned that other small pets, such as hamsters and guinea pigs, had suffered fatal poisonings from this gel, also.
A while back, there were news reports of children being sickenened from hand gel. Makes you wonder about this product's safety. Please be very cautious around small pets and humans!

My DD is a germ nut and uses that stuff all the time, I'll tell her not to use it at home and to keep it put away!

How scarry!! I've heard of kids eating it and being harmed. I hate that stuff!! My kids & I all get hives on our hands from using anything anti-bacterial within minutes of using it. It is very painful. The schools use it - the gel in the classrooms and anti-bacterial soap in their bathrooms. If they knew that it didn't kill viral bugs - only bacterial ones. Check out this website that I found while visiting Canada this summer . . . Here is an piece that came directly from their website:

[Quote]2. Not all bugs are created equal. Both viruses and bacteria cause infections, but antibiotics only work against bacteria.

Viral infections:

* Colds, flu, croup, laryngitis, chest colds (bronchitis) and most sore throats are caused by viruses.
* Are more contagious than bacterial infections. If more than one person in your family has the same illness, it is most likely a viral infection.
* Can make you just a sick as bacterial infections.
* Usually get better in 4-5 days but it may take as long as three weeks to fully recover.
* Antibiotics do not work against viruses.

Bacterial infections:

* Are less common than viral infections.
* Do not spread as easily from one person to another as viral infections.
* Cause infections such as pneumonia and strep throat.
* Antibiotics do work against most bacteria.

3. Antibiotic resistance is a problem. Use antibiotics wisely.

What is antibiotic resistance?

* Using antibiotics when you don't need them (for example, colds and flu) can lead to antibiotic resistance.
* Bacteria have "antibiotic resistance" when they cannot be killed by antibiotics.
* Remember it is the bacteria that are resistant - NOT YOU!
* Even very healthy people who have never taken antibiotics can become infected with antibiotic resistant bacteria from others.

What can you do?

* Do not expect an antibiotic for most respiratory infections. Most respiratory infections are due to viruses.
* Trust your doctor if an antibiotic has not been prescribed.
* Wash your hands to prevent the spread of infections.

I finally found a wonderful way for us to wash our hands in public . . . paper soap, and it works wonderful. It's a small piece of "paper" about 1 1/2" x 2". It dissolves as you rub it and walla - you get bubbles. Small enough to fit into our pockets. The container holds 50. Even smells nice. In my opinion - worth the money. Here's the link, if anyone is interested.
