Health Testing

In going over all the tests that should be done, my question is.....
Once the tests are done, and the paperwork completed, is it necessary to get a CHIC # if your dog is not going to be breeding or shown? Are all the tests necessary if your dog is a companion dog only?

It really depends on what your dog's breeder wants. I have certain tests required to be done on my puppies even when they go to pet homes so I can track the depth and breadth of health problems (preferably the lack of) in the dogs I have been breeding. Was there any testing required in your contract?

I would think you'd want to cerf test yearly, at the very least. Cataracts can be operated on and it's best if they're caught early.

Yes, that's true. And you wouldn't need to bother sending the results in to OFA if you did that, but it would be a bonus for everyone else if you did.

The more dogs in the health databases, the better for all of us.

My breeders didn't test, but I had Kodi CERF'd and he is fine. I will do that every year. I just wish there would be more clinics available for lower cost testing. I'm going to print out the testing criteria from the HCA site and start from there.

Thanks for the input. I think I would feel better knowing that my puppies are OK, especially when they can be corrected, like cataracts.
