Frontline Plus

I gave my 9 month old a dose of frontline plus a week ago. It says it is waterproof. So I gave him a bath 4 days later because he was pretty dirty. I shampooed and conditioned him and both have humectrant as an ingredient. He is scratching and grooming himself quite a bit afterwards. No particular place. I did find one flea on him but haven't seen any others. I talked to someone who has a dog with a double coat like the Havanese and she said that the flea medicine doesn't work on double coats as it doesn't permeate the coat. I'm curious if any one else has had any issues with flea medicine and Havanese. He may just be itchy from his bath or the flea medicine didn't take. Thoughts?

The topical flea medicines should be applied to the skin of the dog after parting the hair between the shoulder blades and on the back. It absorbs into the skin so it shouldn't matter if the dog has a double or single coat.

One flea bite can cause itching for awhile if a pup is a bit allergic. Also, when you bath you gave to rinse, rinse, rinse and rinse some more to be sure that you get every bit of shampoo residue off your pup as any left in the coat can make them itch. My Leo itches when I apply topical flea meds so I have stopped doing so. I put it on my big dogs a few months each year but not on Leo. I comb him thoroughly morning and night so I know that there are no fleas or ticks on him. That said he gets itchy sometimes. It could be something in the diet, reaction to shampoo or conditioner, allergy to grass, carpet, etc. that makes ours pups itchy.

Thanks for your responses. I did notice he has a flea bite so that might be it. The shampoo/ conditioner may not have been rinsed off as thoroughly as needed. Hard to say. I will keep an eye on him and hopefully it will calm down a bit for him.
