Our Ibuprofen adventure

Just a heads up to all forum members, keep those drugs way out of reach of your dogs!

I forgot a "blister pack" of Ibuprofen tablets next to my GFs bed-table (I was being and good boy and got her an early morning tablet to ease her fever) just before I left for the airport for a 3-day visit to my parents in Crete.

Mucho was very happy to chew on the blister pack for some time while the GF was asleep, so of course he swallowed a few pills (thankfully the pack was almost empty, so he probably ingested "only" 2-3, meaning around 500-750mg of Ibuprofen).

Thankfully he'd already found some dirty napkins (she was sick, you get the picture) and ate those during the night, which led to a self-induced vomit some time after his walk... and then the GF discovered the empty blister pack and ran to the vet.

The vet induced vomit (via injection) and found some blood in the last one, so they put Mucho immediately on IV fluids to lighten the kidney/liver load and some other medication to protect the gastrointestinal system.

We got some pretty good blood work a few days back which show no kidney failure and some liver enzymes elevated, but the all the vets are confident that a few days of hepatic diet and some extra pills should get everything back to normal.

I'm still not sure whether this has made any lasting damage to Mucho's organs, but after worrying so much during the weekend and getting decent blood results back, I can't worry much more about the future.

We'll go for a second round of blood work in a week or so, I'll keep you posted!

Wow, how frightening. Things can happen so fast, in spite of our best attempts to be vigilant, and knowing that one slip up can have disaterous results can be nervewracking. I'm glad that Mucho is feeling better!
