Dog food info

I learned something this weekend I thought I would share. I have not confirmed it for myself, but the person that shared this information is a very knowledgeable breeder and I trust her completely.

Canidae is made by Diamond Foods which made many of the foods involved in the earlier recalls and deaths last year. There is a class action against Canidae for rectal bleeding bloody diarrhea (HGE) lethargy leading to death just beginning. Taste of the Wild is also made by Diamond.

Thanks for posting this!
I also have Jester and Daisy in the lawsuit, as do some of the other Havanese owners that I know that developed bladder stones while on Canidae-

Thanks for posting this Kathy. My girls are on Taste of the Wild.
This whole dog food debacle is so frustrating!! Who knew it would ever be so difficult to feed dogs.
Oh well, McKenna is begining to turn her nose up at it anyway, being the typical Hav that she is. Now what.........................

Very interesting...
This is why I started home cooking for Pixie. It's soo easy, I could kick myself for not doing it sooner.

Thanks for posting this Kathy.

I had fed Taste of the Wild for couple of days, but it gave Benji and Lizzie severe constipation. I have always fed them home cooked meals mixed with kibble but now it looks like going raw or completely homecooked meals is the safest way to go.

Best, Poornima

thanks for posting this info. I am in the process of looking at a new food for Cocotini and had thought about Taste of the Wild- so I'll take that off my list. I had already decided not to try Canidae knowing the problems Katie had with her dogs! The list of foods to try keeps getting shorter

So scary that something we feed can cause their death. Thanks for sharing this

It is true that Canidae had some problems two yrs. ago with the recalls, but where I work (store that sells health food for cats and dogs), we've been reassured things are more than fine and only a very few products were affected. That doesn't make it o.k., but many dog owners still buy Canidae from us and are happy with it. Go figure..... there are so many better choices out there, though, I think 'why even take a chance?' !

I haven't heard anything about 'Taste of the Wild', though it is hard to find here.

Anyone wanting to see what the best foods out there are, should check out www.dogfoodanalysis.com I agree that raw, home-cooked and high quality canned are even better than good kibble, but I do give mostly kibble to mine - for now - because it's been the easiest solution. Ricky now eats Fromm's Whitefish and Sammy eats Acana Pacifica.
