The dreaded show coat

Trying to keep my girls in a show coat has been the death of me. These playful little creatures are never going to finish! Our current leading lady has 8 points and is sitting out of the next round of shows because she just isn't competitive. My problem is I have let them play. I try not too.... I run around the house hollering "no coat! NO COAT!" trying to get them to play with toys or anything else and I have totally failed. Any secrets for keeping your Havvies in a nice show coat when you have more than one?

Boy I have no advice just sympathy. I don't have show dogs just two boy Havies that are the love of our lives, but play they do and are not shy about it. The oldest one Oliver has places on the top of his head where little sprigs of hair are sticking straight up because it is starting to grow back from "playing" sessions. His coat has spots like that all over. It is not unusual to find little tufts of hair floating across the floor. His tail was especially appealing to Hershey when Hersh was a little guy, thank goodness he is over that. He would hold on to Ollie's tail and get towed across the hardwood floor. He loved it Ollie didn't and his tail didn't love it either. I don't know what you do about it, they are having such fun and are not trying to hurt each other and in fact they don't hurt each other. The hair just suffers in all the fun.

I wish I could offer the judges a note:

Dear judge. As you can see Maggie's coat has taken a little wear and tear over the last couple years. It's hard not too, with her being the most Havaneseey Havanese and full of fun antics all the time and wanting to play with our other dogs most of the day. Please judge her based on what her coat could look like if she didn't have that havanese spirit in abundance.

Cheerfully yours, (because who can be sad with Maggie around)
Pam

I don't know... Honestly, I let mine play... and so do my other show and breeder friends around here. In fact, we get them ALL together for play dates too!

Maybe that's the secret... ALL the Havanese around here look like they are allowed to play. They get spiffed up for shows, of course, but one, who is a Silver GHC showed half his career with his mustache shorter on one side from a little sister chewing on it!

I agree, to deny them play would be cruel. They are so joyful when then are tearing around and wrestling. I must admit it brings a pretty big smile to my face too.

I agree with Karen and Ollie's mom. Not healthy to inhibit play.

Leo and Rex play really hard. I ended up having to cut Leo's ear fringes few months ago because they do so ratty looking with Rexy chewing and pulling on them. I can't imagine trying to keep them in show coat. It would be heartless to not allow them to play.

Nino is a show dog, and since Mario is older, they don't play like I'm assuming yours do, but before he is a show dog, he is a pet. I would never deny him play time, outdoor zoomies, hikes, mud baths, etc because I want to keep his coat in a certain condition. That said, his coat is by far not his best attribute, so I'm not sacrificing much. Dogs are dogs, though, especially our beloved but spunky Havs, and I would feel awful not allowing him to be him.

Sophie, Mario, and Nino.
