"Socialization" Opportunity!!

I heard about our local AKC Kennel Club for the first time this weekend!!
So, i gave them a call just now and talked with a nice lady who rescues dobermans! She has 25 right now!
Anywho, I was inquiring about a play group or any other small dogs in the club. She told me that they do have a few Shihtzu's, but thier "mom" won't LET them on the grass for RALLY classes! Poor puppies... I can understand though, they are in full coat apparently. Anywho, the lady told me that these rally/confirmation classes are FREE!! So excited! So Tillie and I were invited to come check it out and see if we were interested! Even if we just sit and observe for a few weeks, it will hopefully get Tillie around other well behaved bigger dogs, where she can sit and watch and not HAVE to be nose to nose with them if she isn't ready. And if she is interested, we might do the Rally class too! how cool is that!!? Just wanted to share some happy news!

Thumbs up

Good for you Tammy. Just go very slowly. Watch for signs that she 's not comfortable and only go further when she's ready for it. Study the other dogs and talk to their owners, and you'll get to know which ones are approachable. Great descision ,just to sit and watch. Too many people go too fast and end up doing more harm than good.

Thanks Dave!
Ya, that's what I was planning on doing, we will just go to "observe" until Tillie decided she is ready to get closer to the other dogs! Knowing that we don't have to pay $$$ for a 6 week class or something like that really takes the pressure off! We could go for months before Tillie is ready... or she could be ready to jump in right away. I'll just follow her lead. Either way it will be great to get out and be around other dog lovers and get her in a controlled situation where she will likely interact with the same dogs every week. win-win for both of us!!

That's AWESOME, Tammy! Another potential Rally dog on the forum!

If Tillie isn't used to (and really like!) a crate. you might want to spend some time working on that before you go to classes. Many dogs are much happier watching from their nice snug crate with a bone than sitting with their owner on a leash. And if you're going to do Rally, you'll probably want her to be happy waiting in a crate anyway... she'll need someplace to be while you're walking courses.

Thanks for the idea Karen!
I have thought about doing Rally since before we even HAD her, but it was kind of derailed when DH learned how much $$ it was and that the nearest Agility center was about 40 minutes away ... so that thought kind of went out the window. BUT, now I have renewed interest, for sure! The kennel club actually has thier dog show in 2 weeks, about an hr and a half away from here. NO Havs in it though... I may go and take Tillie and my daughter anyway, we've never been to a dog show before!

Augie and I have a great time at our Rally classes, even though he is the only small dog there. I believe it has gotten him more comfortable around the larger dogs. And it is fun to socialize with the other members of the class. And our trainer is silly and makes it fun!

Hope you and Tillie enjoy it!

The good thing about Rally is that once you take a few lessons, it's something you can practice on your own, in your own back yard. You can download the signs right of the AKC (or APDT) website, print them out, put them in a plastic sleeve, and be creative on how you stand them up. I use plastic "kiddie" traffic cones and a couple of pieces of sticky velcro.

It's either expensive or a lot of work to put together an agility course, but a Rally course is a piece of cake!

Yes, the nice thing about Rally is that only one dog is in the ring at a time, so there is no reason for a little dog to be intimidated by the big ones. The biggest problem Kodi has with big dogs is the ones that drool... If he goes after them, all he wants to do is sniff where ever they've drooled! (or worse)

Thank goodness, no droolers in our class! Just one female who periodically goes into heat! HUGE distraction!
