AKC registration required?

I did not register Baxter. Is registration required for rally/agility events?

First, are you sure it's too late to register Baxter? Are his parents registered? If so, your breeder should be willing to help you get him registered, especially if you intend to trial him... It's a feather in their cap if he does well.

If you truly CAN'T register him, all is not lost. AKC now allows non-AKC dogs to enter all performance sports. But you'd have to enter him as "All American" rather than as a Havanese. Also, it is up to the organization that is holding the event to decide whether they will allow non-AKC dogs. In this area, it's a little less than 50/50 in terms of how many clubs are allowing non-AKC dogs. Besides AKC, though, there several other great venues for each of these sports.

For Rally, there's APDT (my personal favorite), UKC, and in some areas, C-Wags. For Agility, there is CPE, TDAA (limited to small dogs), NADAC, USDAA, ASCA and probably others I'm forgetting. For formal obedience, there's UKC and CDSP. So even with an unregistered dog, you'll never be at a loss for things to do.

I feel pretty stupid. She gave me the registration papers, and I just didn't see the need. So, I threw them away. I only wanted pets. But Baxter is so much fun to work with that I've been thinking it might be cool to take agility classes or something and do some competitions. Then, it occurred to me that he might need to be registered . . . .

I suppose I could contact the breeder/owner and see if she could send me a new form to submit.

I would think she'd be willing to help you... Give her a call!

Actually, the AKC has a program for just this case! PAL, the "Purebred Alternative Listing" program; it used to be ILP.

"There are various reasons why a purebred dog might not be eligible for registration. The dog may be the product of an unregistered litter, or have unregistered parents. The dog's papers may have been withheld by its breeder or lost by its owner. Sometimes, it is the dog itself that was "lost." There are many dogs enrolled in the PAL/ILP program after they have been surrendered or abandoned, then adopted by new owners from animal shelters or purebred rescue groups. The PAL/ILP program allows the dog and owner a second chance at discovering the rewards of participating in AKC events."

Your Hav must be spayed/neutered, and you must provide a quick blurb and a few pictures so they can see that yes, your pup is identifiable as a Havanese.

So if your breeder can't help you out with the papers, you can still register/compete as a Havanese!

People in the dog show world know me as Karen, but the rest of the world knows me & I will introduce myself as Kat... I've been showing dogs longer than I've had the nickname, and the nickname is not new!
