Questions about dog shows

Hi everyone,
I'm planning to attend my first dog show this weekend as a spectator and have a few questions after reading about it on the Internet. Its being hosted by the Del Montey Kennel Club not far from my home. Its an all breed show with Obedience and Rally trials. There will be 133 breeds represented and over 1200 dogs signed up for the event. By the way 3 Havanese will be competing. It will be outdoor venue. I wasn't expecting it to be so large. Is this typical? Should I bring a lawn chair? I was hoping to bring Charly with me but I don't know if that is frowned upon or normal for spectators with well behaved dogs. Any input would be appreciated.

My dog is not spoiled I'm just well trained.

I'm answering as a frequent spectator. I would not bring Charley for 2 reasons. It's usually frowned upon and it's usually very HOT! Definitely bring the lawn chair. You'll probably end up doing a lot of walking around to see the different events and the vendors. I always leave my chair in it's spot it has never been bothered. Bring your camera and $$$ for the vendors, they usually have neat stuff, especially if it's a big show.

Thanks Rita. I didn't think about my camera. I was definitely looking forward to all the vendors. It doesn't get hot here on the coast but I wont bring Charly sense its not proper edict.

Rene, you'll have lots more questions when you return from the show! It's hard to determine who won what and why when you are new to this game. Enjoy it and you'll certainly enjoy just seeing all those gorgeous dogs.

Make sure to sit in on some Obedience and Rally trials. They're not as intimidating as Confirmation (dog show) and great fun to see the teamwork between owner and dog.

I'm definitely showing up early to watch the 3 Havaneses compete. I plan on watching some of the many Rally events and Novice Obedience. I'm sure I wont understand a lot but I hope I learn a little while I'm there.

Definitely. They're even having team Rally trials. I was unaware there could be teams in Rally. I'm only going to watch Conformation if it's what the 3 Havanese are competing in. The Havanese compete at 8:30 am then the Obedience and Rally trials start at 11:30. Planning on strolling the vendors between those events.

Del Montey kennel club dog show

I'm so glad I went to the dog show. I had a great time, learned a lot and met some nice folks. The vendors were really helpful too. I must say the highlight of the day was meeting Sandra Wayne from Sandcastle Havanese. She approached me in conversation and after a while I realized who she was. I recently bought and read Havanese Stories A Memoir of the Olde Ones by Pattie Zielke. Sandra's story and her dogs Molly and Chance are in the book. I found her very personable, helpful and I'm glad we ran into each other at the show. I'm starting to think it might be fun to attend the nationals in Chicago next year.
