Successful Rally Weekend!

Was at a CARO rally trial this weekend (Canadian ASsociation of Rally Obedience). Had a great time. Gemma (my havanese) was able to get her last leg that she needed to get her novice title and then got all three legs needed to get her advanced title! She got a first place with a score of 199/200 in the single novice run that she did. In advance she did quite well with a second place and two thirds. She and my other dog Ruby (labradoodle) actually had tied scores twice; she beat the ruby on time once and Ruby beat her on time once. Ruby also got her advanced title. CARO is the only organization that Ruby can compete in (as a mixed breed dog) and there is only 1 trial a year in this part of the country, so i was happy to get both dogs titles this year.

Here is a photo of the girls with their ribbons at the end of the first day!

No, my boyfriend arrived just before the last run and was going to shoot a video, but as soon as the dogs saw him they went crazy (he likes to play with him and they just love him). They were completely silly in the ring, looking everywhere for him and not doing anything right. They both NQ'd. Even if he got video i wouldn't post it!

It was a tough course, they had the off-set figure 8 with food bowls just beside the jump, they also had a recall right beside the jump. Nasty judge to make such a challenging course!

Oh, I know that feeling!!! One place we trial has a very nice room for people to hang out, have lunch and crate their dogs, then a wide hallway that goes in several directions, and off that is the room with the ring. There is JUST room for the ring, a row of chairs against the wall, and a narrow strip where you can do your last minute warm-up. I was in that space, next dog to go into the ring, and Dave showed up. I took one look at him (Kodi hadn't noticed him yet) and said in a panicky half-whisper, "NOW IS NOT A GOOD TIME!!!"

He turned on his heel and went out. But I hurt his feelings, and he hasn't come to a trial since. If he'd been there all day, it would have been fine. It was the showing up RIGHT before we went in the ring that was a problem!

Your CARO courses (and the scoring scale) sound like they are similar to our World Cynosport Rally. (was APDT) WCR is cored on a total possible 200 plus 10 bonus points. (you can't NQ on the bonus, and it can't negatively effect your score, only increase it)

Last year we had a course where you had to heel back and forth right near the food bowls about 3 times before entering the offset figure 8, then later in the course there was a send over jump heading RIGHT toward the bowls. It was OK for Kodi because he's small, but some of the bigger, longer striding dogs were landing practically IN the food bowls before they could turn. There were a LOT of NQ's!

Is the CARO offset figure 8 2 bowls or 4? AKC just uses 2, WCR makes you figure 8 around 2, while two others act as distractors. (it looks like a diamond, were you figure 8 around the two points of the diamond)

Kodi USED to be really solid on that exercise until we had a judge put freeze dried LIVER in the bowls!!! I COULD not get him off those bowls, and finally had to carry him out of the ring. We've had to do a LOT of training since then to fix the broken figure 8. Most judges around here put food in the bowls, but something lower value, like kibble or dog biscuits. In fairness to the judge, I think she just hadn't thought it through. I've shown under her many times since then, and she has NEVER put such a high value treat (and one that many dogs use regularly as a training treat) in the bowls.

Still it sounds like you girls had a STELLAR weekend, even with a couple of NQ's thrown in. You have every right to be EXTREMELY proud of them both!

figure 8 is just 2 food bowls. In CARO they only use food. In CKC rally (Canadian KEnnel club) they use either food or a toy. The toy is really bad because it isn't covered, just sitting right there on the floor and is sooooo tempting! it's usually a well used/smelly well loved toy that someone has donated too, which makes it worse!

Yesterday a dog defecated in the ring which was worse than the food bowls, but the judge didn't penalize too much, since it happened half way thru and it wouldn't be fair to punish half the dogs for the distraction! The cleaned it up well, but there must have been a lingering smell on the mats because every dog after got distracted in that corner.

Yes, we had a trial where a dog lifted his leg on the ring gating. They did the best they could to clean it up, but you just KNOW that it was in all those little joints, where no amount of cleaning could get to it. BIG distractor, especially to the entire males in the class!!!

I don't think they ever use toys in WCR, but they do in AKC… Sometimes they'll have a toy in one and food in the other. They had toys at the Corgi trial a couple of years ago, and I thought it was really mean. Corgis are SO play driven! Kodi and I got around it fine, but I don't think a SINGLE Corgi got through without at least getting points, and severla NQ'd outright. There was a moment of comic relief (for the rest of us… I'm sure his handler was MORTIFIED) when one Corgi picked up the SQUEAKY football and took off with it!!! There was NO WAY he was going to willingly come back of give it back. The totally embarrassed handler, the judge and a steward had to corral him in a corner and pry the football back out of his mouth!
