Specialty Spectator??

There is a Havanese Specialty coming to Harrisonburg Va in June & was wondering if these things are open to anyone & their dogs just to watch? I thought it might be fun for them. Also read in a few spots that their are sales booths there from people trying to sell their stuff. Thought that might be neat to see products that are out there.
Is there a high risk of your dog picking up parasites etc...or worse? Any info would be helpful. Thanks everyone!!

Yes, it's open to everyone. We will be there with at least one dog. There are always good seminars and great food. Auction friday night and a great time is had by all. No more worry about picking up any cooties any more than any other dog show. There are always lot of Havanese there even other than those showing, including puppies. People come from all over the country for this one.

The BRHC Specialty is one of the best showing weekends in the country. On Saturday at the Harrisonburg show, there is a pizza party and auction. There will be more Havanese than one can count and most of them are pets. There are great seminars during the day and we all sit around talking and laughing...........so much fun. On Sunday the actual specialty occurs. Afterwards we have a pot luck lunch and more seminars/fun. Most of us spend the night and then go home on Monday. I travel over 1000 miles one way to attend. I have friends coming from Texas, Ohio and Washington state. You should attend if you can. You'l makes friends for life.

Tom, is there any website where we can get more detailed info, such as seminars, etc? Also, what exactly is a "speciality". Thanks.

I wanted to attend this specialty last year and this year, but last year I had to change plans at the last minute and this year I already have other plans for a family event. Next year for sure!

I hope as many of you who can go, do. I've heard a lot of fun things about the Blue Ridge Club and their specialities. Enjoy!

AKC sets the definition to what a Specialty is. This definition changes when the need arises to the AKC. It is for the advancement of a particular breed. Seminars are required such as Judges Education and Ringside Mentoring for judges in training. Also there is a Sweepstakes class which is separate from the regular classes for young dogs supposedly to show off results os breeders' programs. The Sweepstakes are usually judged by new judges not necessarily quite qualified to judge in the regular rings. Any Sweepstakes win is considered a big win. Local or Regional Clubs put on Specialties but they have to be done to meet AKC rules. They are much more than a regular weekend show for the Specialty breed.

The BRHC summer specialty is always a big deal and a big time. There's a big open pavilion with the best covered dish meal you will find anywhere and LOTS of Havanese.

Tom, thanks for the explanation.

Shannon, thanks for the info. I've been checking the website and I guess they just posted the info recently. I'm really trying to make arrangements to attend. I hope I can get there.

Wow, sounds like a blast! Too bad it's so far. There is a show in Dollard-des-Ormeaux (Montreal) this weekend but we are so busy with activities here so not sure I can make it. There is only one Hav showing.

Those of you that do go, please let us all know about it once you're back. Enjoy!
