We did several months of research about havanese. At that time we were in love with the breed but still trying to decide if we could handle a dog again. I went through referral lists from the local havanese club and the HCA. At the time I found the local list more helpful and contacted breeders. I filled out applications and spoke to a couple of different breeders that met our requirements as far as health testing, distance, and everything else. One had a litter on the way, and the other was expecting a litter but the mother miscarried. We were on the waiting list for the other, when the first called us back with an older puppy she had decided not to show. We drove down to see the pup and the rest is history, as they say. The entire process took six months or more, and could have been longer. Getting a puppy is a lifetime commitment and we didn't want to rush.
